Colindale kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Dense concrete and blockwork mean the wall cannot be chased back or packed out, so the stone carries the scribe. Splashbacks come off the same slab run as the tops, which means the decision has to be made before fabrication starts. The wall decides, not the brochure.
One of the densest concentrations of new apartments in London, where kitchens are open-plan single walls or L-shapes of 2.7m to 3.4m with an integrated hob, oven and full-height fridge already in place. Nearly all the work is replacing developer laminate with stone inside a kitchen nobody wants to reconfigure, plus a matching upstand and window sill.
Measure the goods lift and the flat's front door before quoting, because on these blocks the building, not the kitchen, sets the largest piece you can deliver. Towers with booked goods lifts, concierge sign-in, insurance documentation and time-limited loading bays, and underground car parks with height barriers that stop a standard stone van. Lift internal dimensions decide the maximum piece.
Entry-phone access, a booked lift and a parking bay near the entrance all have to be arranged before a date is confirmed. The rear kitchen wall in ex-council flats and maisonettes is commonly dense in-situ concrete or blockwork with a thin skim, which means mechanical fixings are hard work and the splashback is held on adhesive rather than screwed. Decided before fabrication starts.
What we are usually templating in is 2010s-2020s high-rise apartment, regeneration low-rise and 1930s semi at the edges. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

What gets asked for here
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.
ex-local-authority flats and estates
The building, and what it does to the job
Where a run finishes into a reveal, the depth of that reveal is taken at worktop height and nowhere else. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. An upstand rides what a panel exposes.

Getting stone into a Colindale kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Colindale
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Colindale?
Yes. Colindale is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW9. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Barnet. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. Upstands travel in a crate and can wait on the van, which gives some flexibility a full-height panel does not. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Colindale change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?
A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. That suits a full-height piece, because a large flat panel bonded across its back is more stable on concrete than a run of small tiles ever was. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. Measure the goods lift and the flat's front door before quoting, because on these blocks the building, not the kitchen, sets the largest piece you can deliver.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Colindale?
Towers with booked goods lifts, concierge sign-in, insurance documentation and time-limited loading bays, and underground car parks with height barriers that stop a standard stone van. Lift internal dimensions decide the maximum piece. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. Joint positions follow from that.
Is worktop splashbacks & upstands common in Colindale?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Sockets final before template. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Splashbacks and upstands are cut from the same slab run at the same time, which is the only way the batch actually matches. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.
Why do two Colindale kitchens the same size price differently?
Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. The same shape decides where splashback pieces break, and a joint in a corner reads as a detail while one in a clear run reads as a mistake. The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. Any surface trunking or conduit has to be rerouted or accepted and boxed before templating, because the stone cannot be scribed around a live conduit on site. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. Full-height panels need the wall made good first, which is another trade and another timescale. Same slab run as the tops.
