Worktop templating in Higham Hill

A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. No stone is ever cut from a plan. Side access to the rear is the norm, so long single pieces are achievable and the design does not have to be broken up for the hallway.

Wider roads than central Walthamstow, with side gates on most semis and a fair number of driveways, so slabs can go straight down the side to the back door. Parking restrictions are lighter here than around the town centre. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for.

The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit.
