Holloway kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terracelarge post-war estateabove-shop flatconversion flat

Lath and plaster, a settled floor and a hall with a turn in it are the three things that decide how this job runs. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. Same slab run, same day, same batch.

Whole-house work exists on the quieter streets and usually means a modest rear extension rather than a full side return.

Estate blocks need a lift booking, while the converted terraces need a route through a shared hall crowded with bikes and buggies. Victorian terraces heavily converted into flats alongside substantial estate blocks, so most kitchens are compact and fixed at 2.4-3m with appliances already positioned. In converted terraces the shared hallway is the bottleneck, so clear and protect it before anything moves, because you will be turning slabs in a space under a metre wide.

Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. Where a client wants a full-height piece behind the hob, it usually sits in the old chimney recess, and that recess is rarely square top to bottom or side to side, so it has to be templated as a trapezium rather than a rectangle. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.

On these streets the housing is Victorian terrace, large post-war estate, above-shop flat and conversion flat. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Covered on our north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Getting stone into the room

Holloway Road is the A1 red route with no stopping, so all loading happens on side streets under the Monday to Friday controlled zone.

Where the frontage is a clearway the unload happens away from the door and the carry gets longer, which is a crew and time question rather than a stone one. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. Handling is where these pieces get damaged.

Getting stone into a Holloway kitchen

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Holloway

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Holloway?

Yes. Holloway is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N7. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Islington. Where the frontage is a clearway the unload happens away from the door and the carry gets longer, which is a crew and time question rather than a stone one. Panels come off the van in one trip where possible, since a tall piece handled repeatedly is a piece asking to be chipped. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Holloway change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?

Lease conditions and the other flats in the building decide when noisy work can happen, so the fitting day has a start and a finish that are not ours to set. A 100mm upstand bedded on silicone is the honest answer where the plaster bows, because it rides what a tall panel exposes. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure. In converted terraces the shared hallway is the bottleneck, so clear and protect it before anything moves, because you will be turning slabs in a space under a metre wide.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Holloway?

Holloway Road is the A1 red route with no stopping, so all loading happens on side streets under the Monday to Friday controlled zone. Estate blocks need a lift booking, while the converted terraces need a route through a shared hall crowded with bikes and buggies. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. It is usually the full-height panels rather than the tops that will not make the turn, and that only shows up when they arrive. That is agreed at template, not on fitting day.

Is worktop splashbacks & upstands common in Holloway?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Sockets final before template. Party-wall and lease conditions in a converted building set when noisy work can happen, which shapes the fitting day more than the kitchen does. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.

Why do two Holloway kitchens the same size price differently?

A galley run down a side-return extension usually measures longer than a slab will give in one length, so a join is designed in from the start rather than discovered. Upstands follow the run exactly, so every internal and external corner is a separate mitred or butted piece. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. A tall panel that fits at the worktop will stand off the wall at the top unless the wall is dubbed out or the panel is scribed. Scribed, dubbed out, or set proud. Pick one. The chimney breast recess must be replastered and fully dry, and the hob and extractor positions fixed, before anyone templates a full-height piece into it. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Decided before fabrication, not after.
