Leyton kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
Dense two-storey terraces where the kitchen sits in the back addition at 2.2m to 2.8m, with the more thoroughly renovated houses filling the side return for a 3.5m run and a small island. Loft conversions have pushed many households to invest in the ground floor, so open-plan rear rooms are increasingly the norm.
Permit bays are full during the day, so a bay suspension is often the only way to get within carrying distance. Modal filters, planters and School Street closures mean the direct route to a street is frequently blocked, and match days at the local football ground bring event parking restrictions across the surrounding roads.
The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day.
The mix here is Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, post-war estate and recent apartment infill. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
Blocked-through streets are the constant here, so check which end of the road is open on the day of the fit, not at template.

What gets asked for here
Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A plumber either side of us.
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop installation comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into a Leyton kitchen
Modal filters, planters and School Street closures mean the direct route to a street is frequently blocked, and match days at the local football ground bring event parking restrictions across the surrounding roads. Permit bays are full during the day, so a bay suspension is often the only way to get within carrying distance.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Leyton
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Leyton?
Yes. Leyton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E10. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Waltham Forest. Streets near a ground or a venue have restrictions that come and go with the fixture list rather than with the time of day. We stage the strip-out so the old tops leave in one trip rather than trickling out across the afternoon. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Leyton change how worktop replacement works?
The addition wall is half a brick thick in places and has usually had a damp course injected and been re-plastered, which leaves it neither flat nor consistent. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. What is under the old top is the real question. Blocked-through streets are the constant here, so check which end of the road is open on the day of the fit, not at template.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Leyton?
Modal filters, planters and School Street closures mean the direct route to a street is frequently blocked, and match days at the local football ground bring event parking restrictions across the surrounding roads. Permit bays are full during the day, so a bay suspension is often the only way to get within carrying distance. Door width, hall width and the diagonal at the turn are three separate measurements, and it is the diagonal that catches people out. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. The strip-out is planned around it.
Do you do much worktop replacement around Leyton?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.
Why do two Leyton kitchens the same size price differently?
On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Plumber either side of us.
