Rushey Green kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

late Victorian Corbett terraceEdwardian terracepostwar infill flats

The kitchen normally sits in the back addition or a later side return, which puts the run against the oldest and least straight wall in the building. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. One visit, our own installers.

Corbett-built terraces east of the main road with the standard narrow rear addition, 2.4m to 3m galleys until a side return goes in, after which they become 4m kitchen-diners with an island and a rooflight.

These were built with a scullery that has since been swallowed by an extension, leaving a change of floor level roughly where the run crosses. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. The slow parts are slow for a reason.

The stock behind these kitchens runs to late Victorian Corbett terrace, Edwardian terrace and postwar infill flats. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Whether there's a side passage decides the job, where one exists you can get a full-length piece into a rear extension without touching the hallway.

The hallway turn and the door width, which cap the longest single piece we can physically get to the kitchen regardless of what the run measures.

Long uniform streets with permit bays and no drives, plus shared side passages between pairs of houses that give rear access on some plots but not others.

What gets asked for here

Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.

This is the job the local stock asks for first, ahead of worktop templating and worktop fabrication.

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Rushey Green

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Rushey Green, or just list it?

Yes. Rushey Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE6. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Lewisham. Enforcement zones rarely accept a trade van unloading stone as an exemption, so this gets sorted before the date is confirmed rather than argued about afterwards. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop installation in Rushey Green?

A semi has a side passage, and whether it is wide enough to carry a piece flat and turn it in at the back door is the first thing worth measuring. The day is planned backwards from the hall. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Whether there's a side passage decides the job, where one exists you can get a full-length piece into a rear extension without touching the hallway.

Is access a problem in Rushey Green?

Long uniform streets with permit bays and no drives, plus shared side passages between pairs of houses that give rear access on some plots but not others. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. That is what the morning is planned around.

Is Rushey Green mostly worktop installation work for you?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop fabrication. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. One visit, done properly. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. The prep list is not optional.

What decides the price of a worktop in Rushey Green?

A galley run down a side-return extension usually measures longer than a slab will give in one length, so a join is designed in from the start rather than discovered. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
