St Helier kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s cottage estate semi1930s estate terraceestate maisonettepost-war infill

Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. The workshop works to the template drawing and to the measured route, in that order. Proven on the bench, then loaded.

A planned inter-war cottage estate with a small number of repeating house types, so the kitchens are near-identical: a narrow room about 2.4m long with a pantry, a copper or boiler recess and a back door into a side lobby. Most owners want the lobby wall out to gain a return.

The repeating house types mean stock templates are tempting, but the pantry has been removed in about half of them, so every kitchen still gets measured on site.

An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. The kitchen is usually a small square or L-shaped room reached through a narrow entrance lobby and a standard internal doorway, so the limit on piece length is the turn out of the lobby, and short runs mean joins are often avoidable altogether if the layout is nested tightly. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

What turns up on the job sheets is 1930s cottage estate semi, 1930s estate terrace, estate maisonette and post-war infill. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Getting stone into the room

Wide estate avenues with verges and unrestricted parking, but rear gardens are reached through communal alleys between houses that are too narrow for stone, so it is always through the front.

On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. It rarely changes what we cut, but it does change how the pieces are stacked and strapped for the run out. That is the last thing settled before dispatch.

What gets asked for here

This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in St Helier

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover St Helier?

Yes. St Helier is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM5, SM4. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Sutton. On a street with no restrictions the constraint is other residents rather than a warden, so it is worth putting a cone or a car out early. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in St Helier change how worktop fabrication works?

An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. Walls in the system-built blocks are concrete or panel and can bow noticeably over the length of a run, so the template picks up the real line and we cut the back edge to follow it rather than trimming on site with a grinder. Settled on the drawing, cut once. The repeating house types mean stock templates are tempting, but the pantry has been removed in about half of them, so every kitchen still gets measured on site.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in St Helier?

Wide estate avenues with verges and unrestricted parking, but rear gardens are reached through communal alleys between houses that are too narrow for stone, so it is always through the front. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. The maximum piece length is fixed at drawing stage and every join is placed over a cabinet gable from there. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Is St Helier really a worktop fabrication area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Nested for the job in front of us. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match.

Why do two St Helier kitchens the same size price differently?

An L can be mitred at the corner for a continuous look or butt-jointed over the gable, and the two are different money and different risk. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
