St John's Wood kitchens
The buildings and streets around St John's Wood
Reception counter work in St John's Wood lives or dies on the awkward detail nobody mentions on the phone, and that detail is almost always something about the room. Detached and semi-detached villas with large rear kitchens - a 4m run, a 3m island, a separate utility and often a prep sink, all designed by a studio. The portered blocks nearby are the opposite: a self-contained kitchen room with a fixed layout and a landlord consent process before anything moves. Ask for the design and quotation visit. It is free, it carries no obligation, and it settles all of this properly.
Original solid floors are quarry tile or flagstone bedded on ash, and they have moved with the ground rather than with the building. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. What the desk has to do decides what it is allowed to look like.
The plan runs front to back with a spine wall between, so the kitchen is two rooms of work rather than one open space. A school or nursery reception has to be a security point as well as a desk, so a screen or hatch belongs on the same drawing as the top. Concierge desks work as a post room and a security point at once.
The kitchens we see here sit in Regency villa, Victorian semi-detached villa, 1930s mansion block and 1960s portered block. The wall build-up is different in each, and the scribe follows the wall.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why St John's Wood is its own job
Knowing St John's Wood means knowing what to look at on the survey, and what to allow for when the templates are cut. Leasehold and estate consents govern the villas, and the blocks impose porter-controlled access, weekday-only works hours and lift protection. Match and event days at Lord's suspend bays and gridlock the roads around the ground, which needs checking when booking a fitting date. Big islands in the villas usually exceed what four men can carry through the house - check whether the garden doors are still off, because going in through the rear is far easier than round the stair. Every run, cut-out, edge and join goes on its own line of the quote, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
The work
What reception counters involves
The order includes the machining nobody sees: apertures for cable, for a card reader and for a screen stem, each with a radiused internal corner and each cut at the works. The whole desk is dry-assembled at the works, returns and openings included, and checked against the drawing before a single piece is wrapped. You end up with a lower surface a seated visitor can genuinely use, at the height the accessibility standard sets rather than the height that suited the elevation.
Counters are made in pieces sized to the way in and joined over supports the joiner has already built. Fitting is done to a lobby that has to open the next morning, so protection, sequence and clean-down are planned as part of the work. A clinic or nursery in a converted house wants a counter that reads as furniture, which puts the edge profile and the returns under proper scrutiny. Apertures machined at the works, none drilled in a lobby.

The money
What it costs in St John's Wood
The fitting line answers to the lobby and to the hours we are allowed in it, which is why a counter fitted at night costs more than the same counter fitted in the day. An island is a yield question before it is a design one: it either comes out of the same slab as the perimeter or it needs a second. The stone itself is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only; everything done to it is priced separately and shown separately. Every aperture is counted before a figure is given.

What St John's Wood asks for
This is commercial work rather than something the housing here generates. Domestically these streets ask for worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. It runs through the same template, the same bench and the same fitters.
period detached houses and villas
The carry, and what it rules out
Where an event closes the road entirely, the van cannot be moved once it is in, which is a different problem from not being able to park at all. Card readers, cable trunking and the joiner's leftovers leave in the same van, so the space has to hold for the whole visit rather than the delivery. Service yards want a name and a time, given a week out.

St John's Wood in the housing figures
Taken across St John's Wood and the roads either side of it, houses are the minority and blocks are the norm. A lobby reached only by stairs puts a fourth pair of hands on a desk that would otherwise take two. A counter is priced by its pieces, not by its frontage.
Access
Getting stone into a St John's Wood kitchen
Leasehold and estate consents govern the villas, and the blocks impose porter-controlled access, weekday-only works hours and lift protection. Match and event days at Lord's suspend bays and gridlock the roads around the ground, which needs checking when booking a fitting date.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in St John's Wood
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Are you set up to work in St John's Wood, or is it a subcontractor?
Yes. St John's Wood is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW8. It is worked on our central London run, along with the rest of Westminster. A market day closes the street to traffic for the morning and hands it back in the afternoon, which moves the visit rather than cancelling it. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The counter is unwrapped inside the building, never at the kerb. Nothing needs visiting and nothing needs collecting: the template is in your kitchen and so is the fit.
What is different about reception counters in St John's Wood?
A townhouse is tall and narrow with the kitchen at the bottom, so every piece goes down a staircase rather than along a hall. What is wanted there is a counter reading as furniture rather than as a shop fitting, which puts the edge profile, the returns and the finish on the back of the counter under real scrutiny. A stair off the pavement caps what can be turned onto the landing. A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Nothing on a counter is corrected with sealant.
Is access a problem in St John's Wood?
Pieces get staged in the ground floor lobby and sent up singly, which needs somewhere to stand them where nobody will walk into them. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The counter is the last thing in and the first thing looked at. A timed school street shuts the road either side of the school day, so the van goes in between those two windows or it does not go in. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. A frontage with no stopping is a fitting slot, not a fitting day.
Does St John's Wood actually ask for reception counters?
Not to any real extent, and it would be easy to imply it was. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop installation. It describes the kitchens on this patch, not the work that goes into them. Same quoting, same cutting, same fitting as anywhere else on the patch. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Apertures change from desk to desk, so each drawing is its own. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A weekend fit is planned as a weekend fit from the outset.
What makes one St John's Wood kitchen dearer than the next?
The offcut taken out of the middle for a hob is a large usable piece, and it is worth deciding early whether it becomes an upstand or goes in the skip. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. Setting out starts at the entrance end and works inward. Stone is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and the templating, the fabrication and the fitting each carry their own line.
What holds a template up more often than anything else?
Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The template is taken to the carcass as built. Confirm the edge profile and which faces receive it, and tell us whether a screen, hatch or gate forms part of the counter before the carcass is built. Where a letting agent sits between us and the owner the approval passes through two sets of hands, so a quote has to be clear enough to forward without a covering explanation. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Whoever holds the keys holds the fitting slot.
What happens to the worktop that comes off?
Old laminate is light and awkward rather than heavy, so it is usually the easier half of the day. Tiling bonded to the wall behind usually comes away with the old top, so that wall is agreed beforehand. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. An event-day suspension can override a bay that is perfectly usable the rest of the week, so a booked space gets checked again nearer the time. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. Crew size follows the distance from the van to the lobby.
Why would a St John's Wood kitchen need a join at all?
There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. Join count and position are settled from the template drawing rather than improvised on the fitting day. A join cannot cross a cut-out, so a sink mid-run takes away the position you would have used. It is walked round rather than looked at from one side, so the direction the veining runs along it cannot be hidden against a wall the way it can on a perimeter run. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. A counter reads as one plane or as several, and that is a drawing decision.
Do you cut drainer grooves on St John's Wood kitchens?
The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. A curved bay or a canted corner turns up more often here than people expect, and a curve is templated and cut, never bent. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. The lower shelf is there to be used, not to break up an elevation.
Do you check the carcasses before templating in St John's Wood?
Level is checked at the template, which is the point of measuring in the room rather than off a drawing. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. Stone does not flex, so a run that rocks on its carcasses rocks just as badly once it is stone. Where a breast interrupts a long wall the join can often go there, so it reads as a natural break rather than a line in the middle of a worktop. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. Twist in a carcass shows first at the transaction shelf.
