Berrylands kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Stone is far heavier than what is coming off.
Very uniform interwar suburban stock - the same rear kitchen footprint repeated street after street, usually extended straight back to give a 4m galley or an L with a 3.6m main run, and a utility carved off beside the back door.
Runs are short enough that a single slab covers the whole kitchen, which makes the material choice the main lever on the total. The junction between the old floor and the extension floor is where a run crossing it needs packing before stone goes on. What is under the old top is the real question.
What we are usually templating in is 1930s semi, 1930s detached, postwar infill and modern flats. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
Getting stone into the room
Quiet residential roads, off-street driveways at nearly every house, and dropped kerbs that let the van get within a few metres of the front door - about as easy as access gets in the borough.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop installation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

The building, and what it does to the job
Because the houses repeat, so do the mistakes - the original kitchen window sits low, so upstands regularly clash with the sill and need cutting down.
Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day.
Base units that were never screwed back to the wall after an earlier refit, with the old laminate effectively holding the run together and square.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Berrylands
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Berrylands?
Yes. Berrylands is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are KT5. It is worked on our south west London run, along with the rest of Kingston upon Thames. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. The waste run is planned, not improvised. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Berrylands change how worktop replacement works?
Cottage estate houses were built to a small number of standard plans, so the kitchen is compact, roughly square and predictable in the good sense. What catches people out is the junction between the old floor and the extension floor, which is rarely at the same level, so a run carrying across it needs the units packed before stone goes on. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Because the houses repeat, so do the mistakes - the original kitchen window sits low, so upstands regularly clash with the sill and need cutting down.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Berrylands?
Quiet residential roads, off-street driveways at nearly every house, and dropped kerbs that let the van get within a few metres of the front door - about as easy as access gets in the borough. A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is worktop replacement common in Berrylands?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
Why do two Berrylands kitchens the same size price differently?
Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day. Unlock the side gate and clear the alley of bins, bikes and pots, and arrange a plumber for the sink and an electrician if the hob is hard-wired. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
