Charville kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s estate semipostwar terraceex-local housing

The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Proven on the bench, then loaded.

Original mid-century base units are 500mm deep, so a modern 600mm top overhangs badly and you either replace the carcasses or accept a large front oversail. Ex-local semis and terraces largely on their original footprint, runs of around 2.7m with the back door in the corner, and refits driven by landlords and first-time buyers rather than designers.

An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. Walls in the system-built blocks are concrete or panel and can bow noticeably over the length of a run, so the template picks up the real line and we cut the back edge to follow it rather than trimming on site with a grinder. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

The mix here is 1930s estate semi, postwar terrace and ex-local housing. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Same slab run, or it is not a match.

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

True everywhere, stated once

Fabrication is where access quietly becomes a design decision. How the stone reaches the room decides how big each piece can be, and therefore how many joins the kitchen ends up with.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Charville

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Charville?

Yes. Charville is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB4. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hillingdon. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. It is decided in the yard, not at the kerb. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Charville change how worktop fabrication works?

Rear access through a garden or a shared path means long pieces can usually come in whole from the back. The kitchen is usually a small square or L-shaped room reached through a narrow entrance lobby and a standard internal doorway, so the limit on piece length is the turn out of the lobby, and short runs mean joins are often avoidable altogether if the layout is nested tightly. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Original mid-century base units are 500mm deep, so a modern 600mm top overhangs badly and you either replace the carcasses or accept a large front oversail.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Charville?

Wide estate roads with grass verges and paved hardstanding, no restrictions, and you can generally park directly outside the door. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. Once the cut-outs are machined there is no going back on it.

Do you get much worktop fabrication work in Charville?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Landlord work is scheduled around void periods, so the whole thing is a fixed window and the template date matters as much as the fitting date. So the nesting is planned around it rather than around a standard kitchen. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Quartz suits let property well: no sealing, no annual maintenance, and nothing an incoming tenant has to be told to look after. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Nested for the job in front of us.

Why do two Charville kitchens the same size price differently?

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Machined to the real line. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. Dry-assembled before it leaves.
