Church End kitchens
The buildings and streets around Church End
Nothing about reception counter work in Church End is decided by us alone, since the units, the walls and the way you get through the door all get a say. A lot of small interwar cottage-estate kitchens, typically 2.4m of run against one wall with a back door taking out the corner, plus tower-block flats with fixed galley layouts that cannot be moved because the services are in a duct. Refits keep the footprint and change the surfaces. Two kitchens on the same street can need different answers. That is why the price follows the template rather than the postcode.
The ceiling is a concrete soffit with a skim on it, so there is nothing to fix into overhead and no void to hide anything in. The joinery goes in first and the stone is templated to it, so the programme runs the opposite way round from the way a kitchen does. Where the join lands is a sightline question before it is a slab question.
Panel joints run vertically down the walls at regular centres and each one is a slight step rather than a smooth curve. A housing office counter is used hard and cleaned harder, so the surface is specified for wear and the front edge for being leaned on all day. Public counters are specified for wear at the front edge.
The mix here is interwar cottage estate, 1960s-70s tower and slab block and Victorian terrace. Two of those can sit on the same street and quote a long way apart.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Church End is its own job
When we take on a kitchen in Church End the first thing we work out is how the stone reaches the room it is going in. The cottage estates have front paths and no drives; the towers mean a single passenger lift, a booking with the housing office, and often a stair contingency if the lift is out. In the blocks the pipe duct and the meter cupboard fix the layout, so measure the actual clear width between them rather than the nominal unit sizes. None of that changes the price once the template is done. The number we agree at the template is the number you pay.
The work
What reception counters involves
The order includes the machining nobody sees: apertures for cable, for a card reader and for a screen stem, each with a radiused internal corner and each cut at the works. The templater attends once the carcass is in and fixed, and records what the joiner actually built rather than what the elevation showed. You end up with a lower surface a seated visitor can genuinely use, at the height the accessibility standard sets rather than the height that suited the elevation.
Counters are made in pieces sized to the way in and joined over supports the joiner has already built. The public front edge is profiled and polished on the same machine as a kitchen edge, then eased by hand where hands will land on it. A housing office or surgery counter is queued at all day, so the front edge is eased and the surface specified for wear rather than for looks. The lobby opens as normal the following morning.

The money
What it costs in Church End
Machining is where the money sits: apertures for cable and card readers, a radiused internal corner at every opening, and a mitred return between the two levels. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. Thickness on its own can move the supply figure a long way inside the £110 to £550 range, and it changes the machining as well, which is why the two are never given as one number. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

Church End in the housing figures
Across Church End, most homes are rented rather than owned. A short run leaves nowhere to hide a join. Whoever holds the fit-out contract carries the accessible-height obligation, and that is worth establishing before anyone orders stone. What the public leans on is specified for being leaned on.

The building, and what it does to the job
A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. The back return follows the wall as the wall leans.

What Church End asks for
We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Getting stone into a Church End kitchen
The cottage estates have front paths and no drives; the towers mean a single passenger lift, a booking with the housing office, and often a stair contingency if the lift is out.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Church End
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Church End on your patch?
Yes. Church End is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW10. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Brent. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. A booked bay costs less than an hour of a crew standing still. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.
What do the kitchens in Church End do to reception counters?
Some of these are dry-lined on battens over the concrete, so a fixing either finds a batten or goes straight through to the panel behind. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them, and every one has a counter the public queues at: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, a library. A converted front room gives a lobby with no depth to it. A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Column casings take machined returns, not filler.
Do you have trouble getting long pieces into Church End kitchens?
Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The counter is sized to the way in before it is sized to the slab. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. The tail lift needs pavement, not simply a space.
Is Church End really a reception counters area?
No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. A managed portfolio tends to repeat one specification across every flat, which keeps later repairs and replacements simple to order. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Two desks on one site still take two templates. Damage in a let flat is settled as a deposit deduction, so a surface that can be repaired in place is worth more than one that has to be replaced whole. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. Matching across sites means matching blocks, not matching names.
What decides the price of a worktop in Church End?
The two runs are rarely the same length, and the shorter one often carries the sink, which puts the cut-outs in the piece with the least material to spare. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. The return between the two levels is drawn first and cut first. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
What do I need to sort out first?
Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. What is out of true gets measured, not talked around. Tell us the hours the building can be worked in and whether the lobby stays open, and send photographs of every corner so we can find the ducts before we draw. Flats bought out of managed stock keep the original kitchen dimensions long after the ownership changed, so the layout says very little about who is paying for the work. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Approval in writing before a slab is committed to a desk.
What is actually on a Church End worktop quote?
Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. A lobby floor that falls is packed out under the joinery.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. A refuse chute or a service duct takes a corner of the kitchen in several of the standard plans, and neither of them moves. These are the counters where the lower transaction shelf earns its keep, because the people served at it are the people the standard was written for, so the knee space and the clear approach to it are checked on site rather than taken off a drawing. Goods lifts in old warehouses take longer pieces than most buildings.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A tap under a window board still needs room for its handle to lift, which is checked at the template. Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A tall bank of housings at one end takes a chunk out of the working run, so the usable length of that side is always less than the length of the wall behind it. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. A counter join lines up with the plane above it or it gets moved.
Do most Church End kitchens take upstands or full-height splashbacks?
Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because the openings are machined rather than chopped out on the wall. An upstand is a slim strip that follows the worktop up the wall; a full-height splashback runs from the worktop to the underside of the wall units. A full-height piece behind the hob has to allow for the extractor, so that gets settled first. A tower block runs one or two lifts for many floors, so a lift out of service postpones a job rather than making it harder. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, and every one has a counter the public queues at. The knee recess is argued over hardest where the floor is shallowest.
