The buildings and streets around Church Street

post-war estate blockflat above market shopVictorian terraceregeneration new-build

You can plan reception counter work in Church Street from a floor plan, but the plan and the room have a habit of disagreeing once the tape comes out. Flats over the market shops and in the surrounding blocks, with kitchens typically 2.2m to 2.6m of run and appliances chosen to fit rather than chosen first. New regeneration blocks nearby have open-plan kitchens with a compact peninsula and integrated appliances. Two kitchens on the same street can need different answers. That is why the price follows the template rather than the postcode.

Where the external walls have been overboarded to insulate them the room is fifty millimetres smaller than the drawing and the board sounds hollow throughout. Cable routes, card readers and the knee recess are all settled before the slab is nested, because none of them can be cut into a finished counter on site. Where the join lands is a sightline question before it is a slab question.

Most of these are cross-wall construction, so the two side walls carry the building and the front and back are infill, and only two of the four take real weight. These are the counters where the lower transaction shelf earns its keep, because the people served at it are the people the standard was written for, so the knee space and the clear approach to it are checked on site rather than taken off a drawing. Concierge desks work as a post room and a security point at once.

The building types here are post-war estate block, flat above market shop, Victorian terrace and regeneration new-build. The one you have sets the piece length before the kitchen does.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Church Street is its own job

Working in Church Street regularly means we plan for what catches people out here rather than finding it on the day. The street market runs most of the week and the stalls occupy the carriageway, so vehicle access is effectively before the market sets up or after it clears. Above-shop flats are reached by a street door between stalls and a steep stair. Market days dictate the schedule here more than anything in the flat does - book the fit for a non-market morning or you will be carrying slabs through stalls. The visit that sorts all this out is free, and there is nothing to pay until we template.

The work

What reception counters involves

What this is not is joinery. We do not build the carcass, and it has to be finished, fixed and level before there is anything for a templater to measure. The templater attends once the carcass is in and fixed, and records what the joiner actually built rather than what the elevation showed. You end up with a lower surface a seated visitor can genuinely use, at the height the accessibility standard sets rather than the height that suited the elevation.

A reception counter is two working surfaces at two heights joined by a return, and the lower one exists so somebody in a wheelchair can be served at it. A curved front is cut on a waterjet from the same drawing the joiner built the carcass to, so the two radii agree. A housing office or surgery counter is queued at all day, so the front edge is eased and the surface specified for wear rather than for looks. The lobby opens as normal the following morning.

The money

What it costs in Church Street

The lower transaction shelf is the line people do not expect, since it carries its own top, its own finished edges and its own support, and its height comes from an accessibility standard rather than from choice. Short lengths nest well and waste little, so the material line is usually the kindest part of a galley quote. Thickness on its own can move the supply figure a long way inside the £110 to £550 range, and it changes the machining as well, which is why the two are never given as one number. Priced by the pieces, the apertures and the hours in the lobby.

The carry, and what it rules out

Where the stairwell is narrow enough that the stone travels on edge the polished face runs within an inch of the plaster, so the walls get boarded as well as the steps. The counter usually stands near the entrance, which shortens the carry and lengthens the argument about working outside opening hours. Every re-grip near a finished front edge is planned out beforehand.

Church Street in the housing figures

Across this patch this is overwhelmingly let and managed property. Whoever holds the fit-out contract carries the accessible-height obligation, and that is worth establishing before anyone orders stone. Both planes are set out from a single datum.

What Church Street asks for

Not a domestic job, so it is not ranked against the streets around it. Those streets generate worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. Same slabs, same saw, same installers.

Access

Getting stone into a Church Street kitchen

The street market runs most of the week and the stalls occupy the carriageway, so vehicle access is effectively before the market sets up or after it clears. Above-shop flats are reached by a street door between stalls and a steep stair.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Church Street

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Church Street far enough out to be a problem for you?

Yes. Church Street is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are NW8, W2. It is worked on our central London run, along with the rest of Westminster. Where a road is shut for filming or for works the diversion adds distance to the carry even when parking itself was never the problem. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. A booked bay costs less than an hour of a crew standing still. Your part of it happens entirely at home, with nothing to travel to and nothing to bring back.

What should I expect from reception counters in a Church Street kitchen?

The skim over dense block is thin and dishes out round a hole, so a fixing wants a hammer drill and the dust travels through the flat. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them, and every one has a counter the public queues at: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, a library. A stair off the pavement caps what can be turned onto the landing. A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Column casings take machined returns, not filler.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Church Street?

A window sill or a radiator on the half-landing takes the corner out of the turn at precisely the point the piece needs that corner. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. The counter is sized to the way in before it is sized to the slab. Streets near a ground or a venue have restrictions that come and go with the fixture list rather than with the time of day. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. The tail lift needs pavement, not simply a space.

Do you get much reception counters work in Church Street?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a point about the buildings round here, not about the job. The quoting, the cutting and the fitting are identical here to anywhere else we work. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. Repeat receptions are worth settling once and then leaving alone. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. On a fit-out counter the date is half the decision.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

A full-depth tall unit projects past the worktop line, and the run has to be scribed against its side panel instead of carrying on past it. The return between the high counter and the low shelf never nests neatly, and it is what decides how much slab the desk swallows. The return between the two levels is drawn first and cut first. The material band is £110 to £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What state does a Church Street kitchen have to be in before you template?

Where the boxing stands proud of the finished wall the upstand behind it has to be broken into separate lengths, because one piece cannot pass it. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. What is out of true gets measured, not talked around. Tell us the hours the building can be worked in and whether the lobby stays open, and send photographs of every corner so we can find the ducts before we draw. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. Where a managing agent has to approve the work, the drawing goes out in a form they can sign without ever standing in the lobby. Where the freeholder keeps the lobby, the finishes are protected first.

Do you quote Church Street jobs by the square metre?

Two kitchens the same length can be far apart, because material, edge and cut-outs move independently of size. Plumbing, gas and electrical work are not in the figure, because we do not do them. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. A lobby floor that falls is packed out under the joinery.

Which materials need sealing and which do not?

Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. A seal is not waterproofing. It only buys time to wipe a spill up. The handrail is fixed to the wall side of the flight, so the clear width at hand height is a hundred millimetres less than the stair measures at the tread. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, and every one has a counter the public queues at. Steel and brick leave a desk nothing to lean against.

What do drainer grooves add to the job?

A groove set is its own item on the quote rather than something rolled in with the sink cut-out. Which side of the bowl they go is about how you stand at the sink, and it is settled before cutting. They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. The balcony door frequently opens off the kitchen, which puts a threshold, a draught and a well-used route through one end of the run. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. The transaction shelf carries the detail the upper counter hides.

Can the sink be undermounted rather than sat on top?

A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. Nothing is cut out in the kitchen. Cutting a bowl on site is how worktops get cracked. A sit-on sink and an undermounted one are different cut-outs, so which it is gets settled before the template. Where the sink and the hob face each other across the aisle, everything carried between them crosses the walkway, and that is the one movement the shape cannot design out. An external corner on a counter is seen from both sides at once, so it is mitred rather than butted and the pattern is carried round it. A counter join lines up with the plane above it or it gets moved.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
