Ask for the lines rather than the total. One number for a kitchen tells you nothing you can check. A cast iron soil stack runs down the outside of the rear wall, so moving the sink means a fresh penetration through solid brick. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. Where the join lands is a sightline question before it is a slab question.

The bowl position has to be settled before templating, since the grooves are set out from it. Where there is no room for a separate drainer, grooves are usually what gets specified instead. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Injected damp courses and re-rendered lower walls leave the bottom metre standing proud of everything above it. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised.
