Gipsy Hill kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Dense concrete and blockwork mean the wall cannot be chased back or packed out, so the stone carries the scribe. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. A single day, planned properly.
The steepest ground in the borough means split-level houses where the kitchen is half a flight below the entrance level, typically an L-shaped room with a run under a rear window and a peninsula facing the garden view. Conversion flats take compact kitchens in former back bedrooms.
Front approaches are frequently down steps to a lower entrance, and the combination of gradient and steps rules out trolleys. Roads climb sharply with tight bends and limited turning space, so a long van has to plan the route in and out.
The internal stair is usually a straight flight with a tight top landing, and it is the landing rather than the flight that is the limit. Plaster bonded straight onto concrete comes away with the bottom course of tiles, leaving a band behind the upstand. Units kept, surface changed, one day.
What we are usually templating in is Victorian villa, Victorian terrace, 1960s block and Postwar infill. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Second or third on the list around here, after worktop templating. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

The building, and what it does to the job
Split-level layouts mean the kitchen floor and the adjoining room floor are different heights, so set the datum in the kitchen itself and never carry a level through from the hall.
Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. Found at template, not on fit day.
Boxed-in soil stacks and service risers in the corner of the run, which eat into the worktop depth and have to be scribed around rather than cut square.

Getting stone into a Gipsy Hill kitchen
Roads climb sharply with tight bends and limited turning space, so a long van has to plan the route in and out. Front approaches are frequently down steps to a lower entrance, and the combination of gradient and steps rules out trolleys.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Gipsy Hill
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Gipsy Hill on your patch?
Yes. Gipsy Hill is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE19, SE27. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Lambeth. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop replacement in Gipsy Hill be any different from anywhere else?
These are built in dense concrete, so support for a peninsula or an end panel goes in with proper anchors rather than plugs. Ex-council flats and maisonettes are built in dense concrete and blockwork, so anything that has to be fixed back, such as brackets under a peninsula or support for an end panel, goes in with proper anchors and an SDS rather than plasterboard fixings. Units kept, surface changed, one day. Split-level layouts mean the kitchen floor and the adjoining room floor are different heights, so set the datum in the kitchen itself and never carry a level through from the hall.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Gipsy Hill?
Roads climb sharply with tight bends and limited turning space, so a long van has to plan the route in and out. Front approaches are frequently down steps to a lower entrance, and the combination of gradient and steps rules out trolleys. Carrying through the house means protecting the whole route first: floor boarded, banister padded, and the front door held open on a wedge rather than by hand. With no room to turn, the old top gets cut up in the kitchen instead, which is dusty work and needs the room emptied first. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is worktop replacement common in Gipsy Hill?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A kitchen carved out of a larger room sits under whatever the original plan left behind, so the run frequently ends at a blocked doorway or a boxed-in service. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A plumber either side of us. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
The return piece is the awkward one on a slab: short, full depth, and rarely nesting neatly against the long lengths, so yield rather than area is what moves the material figure. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Gipsy Hill?
Level has to hold across the whole room rather than along one wall, or a floor that falls end to end shows as a step where two pieces meet. This is the commonest reason a replacement turns out to need more than a straight swap. The laminate has been covering it up. Sort a parking bay or permit near the entrance, confirm the lift is in service and get us the door codes, and tell us about any asbestos survey on the flat before we start stripping out. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. If the carcasses are tired the honest answer is that stone will find that out, and it is better said before than after. Sound carcasses are the condition.
