Globe Town kitchens
The buildings and streets around Globe Town
Reception counter work in Globe Town is not one job repeated, because the kitchens here are not one kind of kitchen. A lot of estate flats here still have the original compact kitchen off the hall, typically two short runs of 1.8m to 2.2m with a boxed-in soil stack in one corner. Owners tend to replace like for like rather than knock through, so it is small-piece work with a lot of cut-outs around existing services. Guessing at this stage would only put a wrong number in front of you, so we do not do it.
A cylinder cupboard or a drying cupboard opens off the kitchen, taking a corner out of the run and giving nothing back. The lower transaction shelf sits at the height a person in a wheelchair can be served at, and that height is fixed on the drawing before anything else about the desk is. Reception work is quiet work, done to a building already open.
Where the kitchen is on the entrance level, the piece comes off the deck and turns straight in without going up or down at all. Such buildings rarely close, so the counter goes in over a weekend or in an evening with the route boarded from the entrance door. Concierge desks work as a post room and a security point at once.
What the job sheets keep listing is 1930s LCC walk-up flat, 1960s Lubetkin-era estate block and Victorian terrace. Each carries its own carry problem before it carries a worktop.
True everywhere
Reception counters and desks, in short
- A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
- The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
- Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
- Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place
Why Globe Town is its own job
A slab cut to the wrong assumption about Globe Town is scrap, so the assumptions get checked in person first. Balcony-access blocks mean carrying stone along an open deck and through a 760mm front door, and the older walk-ups have no goods lift at all. Street parking is CPZ-controlled and the estate roads have height barriers on the parking courts, so the van usually sits on the main road and the slab is carried in. Deck-access flats are a two-man carry every time, so pieces get sized to what will physically turn into the door rather than what looks best on paper. That is why we survey Globe Town kitchens first and quote second. Working the other way round is how deposits turn into arguments.
The work
What reception counters involves
What this is not is joinery. We do not build the carcass, and it has to be finished, fixed and level before there is anything for a templater to measure. The templater attends once the carcass is in and fixed, and records what the joiner actually built rather than what the elevation showed. You end up with the building open the next morning, because the work was sequenced around the hours it was allowed rather than around a normal working day.
This is commercial fit-out work cut on the same saw as a kitchen, with an entirely different set of questions attached to it. Fitting is done to a lobby that has to open the next morning, so protection, sequence and clean-down are planned as part of the work. These are the buildings where the lower shelf is used most, so the knee space and the clear approach to it are checked on site rather than off a drawing. Templated to the carcass, not to the elevation.

The money
What it costs in Globe Town
A counter is priced by its pieces rather than by its frontage, because the two heights, the return and the knee recess are separate operations before they are one desk. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. Nothing about the £110 to £550 supply range changes once the template is done. What the template settles is the piece count and the operations, and that is where the figure firms up. The transaction shelf is its own line, because it is its own piece.

1930s and inter-war semis
Globe Town in the housing figures
On these streets houses are the minority and blocks are the norm. The scribe allowance is smaller than the London average. A lobby reached only by stairs puts a fourth pair of hands on a desk that would otherwise take two. Counted from the lobby, not from a frontage rate.

What Globe Town asks for
A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. The work is quoted the same way regardless.
1930s and inter-war semis
The carry, and what it rules out
Bollards, planters and a one-way service road can turn what looks like a ten-metre carry into a fifty-metre one. A lobby is one of the few places a piece can be staged, so the counter comes in early and stands on trestles until the carcass is ready for it. The way in is walked with the joiner as well as with a tape.
Access
Getting stone into a Globe Town kitchen
Balcony-access blocks mean carrying stone along an open deck and through a 760mm front door, and the older walk-ups have no goods lift at all. Street parking is CPZ-controlled and the estate roads have height barriers on the parking courts, so the van usually sits on the main road and the slab is carried in.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Globe Town
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Are you set up to work in Globe Town, or is it a subcontractor?
Yes. Globe Town is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E2. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. A short lunchtime window of control exists to keep commuters off the street, and it still catches a trade van standing there for an hour. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. Where the bay is booked by the hour, pieces come off in fitting order. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about reception counters in Globe Town?
A service duct runs between the kitchen and the bathroom stacked above it, and access to that duct stays open whatever the layout does. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them, and every one has a counter the public queues at: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, a library. A stair off the pavement caps what can be turned onto the landing. A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. The scribe is cut in the shop, eased on site, and no further.
Is access a problem in Globe Town?
The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Piece length is capped in the drawing office, not on the landing. Where the nearest legal space is a couple of streets back, the walk with each piece becomes the job, and the crew is sized for walking rather than wheeling. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. The transaction shelf can wait on the van; the counter cannot.
Does Globe Town actually ask for reception counters?
Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop splashbacks & upstands and worktop installation. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. Damage in a let flat is settled as a deposit deduction, so a surface that can be repaired in place is worth more than one that has to be replaced whole. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. A spare offcut kept back can save a whole counter later. The person choosing the worktop is not the person using it, and that shifts the balance from appearance towards running cost. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. Repeat receptions are worth settling once and then leaving alone.
What makes one Globe Town kitchen dearer than the next?
Older houses put the boiler or the meter on one of the two walls, and whatever is boxed in around it sets the point where that run has to stop. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. A curved front is a waterjet job and a carcass problem both. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What holds a template up more often than anything else?
A live soil stack cannot be chased back into the wall, so the depth it steals is permanent and the run is planned around it rather than through it. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. Stone will not straighten joinery, and it will not forgive it either. Tell us the hours the building can be worked in and whether the lobby stays open, and send photographs of every corner so we can find the ducts before we draw. Access is arranged through a managing agent or a scheme office rather than with the household directly, so a date gets confirmed once in writing and moving it costs a fortnight. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. Where the freeholder keeps the lobby, the finishes are protected first.
Is taking the old top off part of the job?
An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. The carcasses stay. Only the surface changes. Applying for a suspension means naming a length of kerb and a date, and moving the date generally means applying for it again. A reception fit is often booked outside opening hours precisely because that is when the kerb in front of the building is free. Nothing is stood anywhere on a pavement it could be knocked from.
Can I buy the stone elsewhere and have you fit it?
Supply through us runs £110 to £550 per square metre for the slab alone, which is the line you would be removing. Remnants bought elsewhere are the awkward case, because the drawing is then made to fit the stone. Templating, fabrication and fitting are the same three lines whether the stone came from us or from you. Where kitchens turn over between tenancies the priority is a surface that survives a decade of being treated as a chopping board. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. On a fit-out counter the date is half the decision.
What is not included in the quoted figure?
Cut-outs, edge profile and join count are itemised, so taking one out removes a line rather than starting an argument. Material is quoted supply only and templating, fabrication and fitting sit on their own lines, so it is visible which part is stone and which is labour. No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number. Boxing built in plasterboard on a light frame will take no useful fixing, so nothing bears on it and the stone is carried off the carcasses either side. A lobby wall that leans shows itself along the back return, so that edge is cut to the line the wall actually takes. The front edge runs straight whatever the wall behind it does.
Is a full-height stone splashback worth doing?
Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the two pieces meet. An upstand covers the gap where the worktop meets a wall that is not flat, which is its real job. If it is a decision for later, say so at the template: the match is a question about the batch. The external wall is a concrete panel with a modest window, so the run under it sits in a shallow reveal with a hard cill. Estates of this kind carry the buildings that serve them: a housing office, a health centre, a community hall, and every one has a counter the public queues at. Steel and brick leave a desk nothing to lean against.

I used Karem’s services 5 years ago for purchasing and fitting the quartz worktop in my then brand new kitchen. The price was reasonable and the service reliable and spot on, no delays in fitting, misunderstanding or excuses. I recommended him to a friend, who also used his services and they were happy too! If I need to order new kitchen work top again, I would definitely use him again. Thanks Karem!
