Stone bar tops in Green Street

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Green Street kitchens

The buildings and streets around Green Street

flat over shopEdwardian terracemarket-area mixed-use building

Nearly all the bar tops we quote in Green Street start with the same conversation about what is already in the kitchen and what is staying. Residential kitchens above the retail parade are long and narrow, fitted along one wall for 2.5m or so, with limited natural light and the flat's only stair coming up beside them. Behind the parade the terraces have conventional rear kitchens serving large families. You can leave that to us. What we need from you is a rough idea of the size and a date that suits.

Floors have usually settled towards the rear, so levelling means packing the units before the stone beds down. The material question follows from what actually gets put down on it, which is citrus, ice and wet glasses rather than hot pans and chopping boards. The bar is set level to itself and packed off the frame.

The stair from the street is narrow with a tight turn at the top, which caps piece length well below anything the run itself needs. A bar here is nearly always a short breakfast counter on the end of a run, and the end is exactly where the load lands with least underneath it. A cellar bar is set to the headroom first.

What we are measuring in, mostly, is flat over shop, Edwardian terrace and market-area mixed-use building. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Green Street is its own job

There is nothing clever about a fit in Green Street going smoothly, only a survey that asked the right things beforehand. The shopping street is busy from morning to evening with loading bans and enforcement cameras, so realistically it is an early start or a bank holiday. Access to the flats is through a shared side door between shopfronts, up a single narrow flight with a 90-degree turn, so nothing over about 2.2m gets up in one piece. Above-shop flats mean carrying stone past a live business, so boards down and a planned route matter more than the fit itself. It is our problem to solve, and solving it starts with a tape measure.

The work

What bar tops involves

The fitting workmanship carries the same five year guarantee as a kitchen worktop, and the support under the front edge is covered by it as much as the stone above is. Where the front edge reaches past what the frame will carry, flat steel is let in flush with the bearing face or corbels are fixed to structure, and which of the two is agreed with you rather than decided on the morning. You end up with one firm answerable for the whole piece, support included, so there is no argument available about whether a sagging front edge is the stone or the joinery.

Most bar tops we are asked to quote began life on a plan as a seating projection that somebody assumed the cabinets would carry. Where the counter has two levels the spine between them is built first, and the two tops are drawn as a pair so the front edges stay parallel down the length. Partitions are lightweight, so noggins go in before any bracket is offered up to a wall. Drawn from the stool and worked back to the wall.

The money

What it costs in Green Street

Two counters of the same length price very differently depending on how far the front edge reaches, because past a certain point the carcass stops carrying it and steel starts. In a galley the runs are short and the cut-outs are close together, so the fixed operations carry more of the total than the stone does. Across the catalogue the supply-only rate is £110 to £550 per square metre, before any of the work that turns a slab into a worktop. A bar is quoted as a bar, not as extra worktop.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Green Street in the housing figures

Around Green Street, the bulk of the stock was standing before the First World War. The kitchens are compact, so the fixed lines outweigh the stone. Suspended floors move under a leaning load, so the frame is fixed back to a wall as well as bearing on the boards. Measured when the room has finished changing.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

What Green Street asks for

Where several adults share the cooking the kitchen is in use most of the day, so a fitting slot has to be agreed with more people than usual. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. Frames get opened up again when the support was left out.

A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. The work is quoted the same way regardless.

Access

Getting stone into a Green Street kitchen

The shopping street is busy from morning to evening with loading bans and enforcement cameras, so realistically it is an early start or a bank holiday. Access to the flats is through a shared side door between shopfronts, up a single narrow flight with a 90-degree turn, so nothing over about 2.2m gets up in one piece.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Green Street

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do your own fitters come out to Green Street?

Yes. Green Street is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E7, E13. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Newham. Where a marked loading box sits on the red route the stop is legal but timed, so the unload runs as one movement with every hand on it. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The bar top waits on the van until the frame is level. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about bar tops in Green Street?

The structure below is commercial, so the floor is often timber over a shop ceiling and the load path under an island is worth thinking about. A bar in this stock is nearly always a short breakfast counter on the end of a run, and the end is exactly the point where the load lands with the least underneath it. Old floors move, so the bar is fixed back as well as down. Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. Every obstruction under the top is a seating decision too.

Is access a problem in Green Street?

Spindles and a newel cap stand proud of the string, so the usable width on a turn is measured to the handrail rather than to the wall behind it. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. A trade bar is carried in outside trading hours or not at all. A bus lane along the frontage brings its own hours with it, and stopping in one is enforced the same way the red route is. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. A licensed room sets the hours and the parking has to agree.

Does Green Street actually ask for bar tops?

Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. Households sharing a house tend to want two prep areas rather than one, which usually means an island as well as a perimeter run. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. Repeat detail, single survey, matched batch. A second kitchen or a kitchenette in an annexe is a small job with the same fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines as a large one. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. The brief changes, but the nose still has to be carried.

What makes one Green Street kitchen dearer than the next?

An aisle under a metre stops being a working space the moment two people are in it, and the depth of the tops either side is what decides whether that happens. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. A breakfast counter and a trade bar are not the same brief. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

What holds a template up more often than anything else?

A run can measure dead right at both ends and still belly out in the middle, which only appears once the template plots the intermediate points. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. The riser is boxed to a line the stone can follow. Tell us what the end of the run is built off, send the length and projection you want, and confirm whether there is rear access into the kitchen. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. The overhang is signed off by whoever pays for the steel.

Can a Green Street worktop be done in one piece?

Dark and heavily veined stone shows a join more than a pale even one, which is worth knowing before the slab is picked. A mitred join at a corner is a different job from a butt join along a run, and they are not priced the same. There are only ever a few legal positions, and the one taken is furthest from the light. A dishwasher door on one side and an oven door on the other cannot both stand open in a narrow aisle, so which appliance goes where matters more in this shape than in any other. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. A raised tier is a second piece, priced and drawn as one.

Do you do undermounted sinks in Green Street?

Two bowls means two cut-outs and a bridge of stone between them, which decides where the sink can go. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. Where the hob lands is set out against the units and the wall behind, not off the kitchen plan. A window at one end and a doorway at the other means one end of the run is lit from behind and the other is interrupted, so the two ends of the same length behave differently. A separate bar in the same room still takes its services from the same run, so the waste, the socket and the water are set out with the kitchen even though the joinery is not. The stool positions go on the drawing before the join does.

Is templating a separate visit from fitting?

The template produces a drawing, and the workshop cuts to that drawing once you agree it. No payment is due before the template. Between the template and the fit the slab is nested, cut, mitred and dry-assembled on the bench, which is work you never see and is most of the wait. Units are often only 500mm deep, so a standard 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors need checking against it. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Everything under the nose is agreed before a slab is chosen.

What if I have already sourced the slab?

Say what you have and where it came from before anything is booked, because thickness and batch decide what can be done with it. Supply through us runs £110 to £550 per square metre for the slab alone, which is the line you would be removing. How the slab has been stored is worth telling us, because stone kept flat is not stone off a rack. Where an annexe has been built or converted, its floor and its walls are newer than the main house and behave differently under the same run. The support has to be specified to whoever is building the frame before it is boarded up, since steel let in afterwards means taking the front of the bar apart again. Where the use is hard, the surface is chosen for it.

We recently had a Calacatta Gold worktop installed by Worktop Worx and are really pleased with the result. It has completely transformed our kitchen, much brighter, modern, and high-end compared to our old wooden surface. The team were professional, efficient, and the finish is excellent with great attention to detail. The worktop looks amazing and is very practical for everyday use. Highly recommend Worktop Worx for anyone looking for quality quartz worktops.
