Hackbridge kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the job is a day, and what makes it a difficult day is the building. A single day, planned properly.
An unusual mix: older terraces with small rear kitchens, and a lot of recent flatted development near the station where the kitchen is a factory-fitted galley or peninsula in an open-plan living space, typically 2.8m with an integrated fridge and washer.
New-build kitchens here are already fitted, so a replacement top means lifting out an existing worktop with a sealed sink and tiled splashback without damaging the cabinets underneath.
Wider halls make the carry noticeably easier, and that alone can remove a join that a narrower terrace would have forced into the run. Lath-and-plaster and bowed brickwork mean we template for scribes rather than straight cuts, and each piece is offered up and eased in rather than dropped straight down. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
What turns up on the job sheets is Victorian terrace, inter-war semi, 2000s eco-development and recent flatted development. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Getting stone into the room
Flat ground with reasonable parking on the older streets, but the newer developments have podium parking, controlled entrances and a lift booking process, and the Wandle crossings limit which way a van can approach.
The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. That is agreed before a plumber is booked.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands.

The building, and what it does to the job
Floors and walls that have settled towards the back addition, so the existing run is out of level and the stone will show it the moment it is set and levelled properly.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Hackbridge
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Hackbridge?
Yes. Hackbridge is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM6. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Sutton. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. A replacement is a two-way job, with old tops going out and new stone coming in, so the van needs to stay put across the whole day. It is a full day at the kerb, not a delivery. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Hackbridge change how worktop replacement works?
Wider halls make the carry noticeably easier, and that alone can remove a join that a narrower terrace would have forced into the run. What the old top has been hiding is usually a floor that settled towards the back and units that were never fixed back to the wall. Units kept, surface changed, one day. New-build kitchens here are already fitted, so a replacement top means lifting out an existing worktop with a sealed sink and tiled splashback without damaging the cabinets underneath.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Hackbridge?
Flat ground with reasonable parking on the older streets, but the newer developments have podium parking, controlled entrances and a lift booking process, and the Wandle crossings limit which way a van can approach. Estate roads are often too tight for a long-wheelbase van to turn, so the carry starts a good deal further from the door than a map suggests. Worth remembering that the old tops have to come out the way the new ones come in, and a laminate run is easier to remove in one length than to carry in one. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is worktop replacement the job you do most in Hackbridge?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project.
Why do two Hackbridge kitchens the same size price differently?
A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. The existing layout is being kept, so the question is whether the old carcasses will take stone in that shape without more support. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Have a plumber booked to disconnect the sink, tap and waste first thing and reconnect after we have gone, and clear the hallway and stairs completely so we can carry slabs through the house. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Sound carcasses are the condition.
