Kidbrooke kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

2010s-2020s Kidbrooke Village apartmentsnew-build townhouse1930s semipostwar estate remnant

Developer carcasses are thin cam-lock chipboard, which is entirely adequate under laminate and wants bracing before stone. What decides between a slim upstand and full-height stone is nearly always the wall rather than the taste. The wall decides, not the brochure.

Mostly new-build: apartments with an open-plan single run and island, and three-storey townhouses with the kitchen at ground level opening to a small garden. Developer worktops are thin composite or laminate, so the common job is upgrading to 20mm quartz without touching the units.

Block and beam floors with blockwork walls are true enough that the scribes are light and the joins can be pulled tight. The plasterboard is genuinely flat here, so a full-height splashback sits well and a slim upstand looks almost redundant, but the sockets are the problem, because they are set out to the developer's original kitchen and often land at odd heights or right on a joint line. The wall makes that decision, not the brochure.

The buildings themselves are mostly 2010s-2020s Kidbrooke Village apartments, new-build townhouse, 1930s semi and postwar estate remnant. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.

True everywhere

Splashbacks and upstands, in short

  • Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
  • Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
  • Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
  • The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Everything is square and level for once, so the risk sits in the developer's sink and hob cut-outs, not the walls.

Dot-and-dab plasterboard that sounds hollow behind the socket runs, so anything fixed through the splashback needs to hit the batten or dab rather than the void.

Getting stone into the room

New estate roads with controlled parking, marked loading bays, and blocks with lobbies and lifts rather than street doors; permits and delivery windows go through the estate office.

The shape of the run

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Kidbrooke

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Kidbrooke, or just list it?

Yes. Kidbrooke is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE3, SE9. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Greenwich. Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. Handling is where these pieces get damaged. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop splashbacks & upstands in Kidbrooke?

Infill plots usually put the kitchen at the back with wide doors to a small garden, and that opening is the best route in. Every socket, switch and any USB point has to be cut out of the stone to the actual measured position, so the template has to be taken with the faceplates off and the back boxes visible. Cut from the same slab run as the tops. Everything is square and level for once, so the risk sits in the developer's sink and hob cut-outs, not the walls.

Is access a problem in Kidbrooke?

New estate roads with controlled parking, marked loading bays, and blocks with lobbies and lifts rather than street doors; permits and delivery windows go through the estate office. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Splashback panels are lighter than a worktop and far more awkward, because a tall thin piece has to be carried on edge and cannot be tilted to clear a turn. It decides panel size before anything is cut.

Do you do much worktop splashbacks & upstands around Kidbrooke?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Sockets final before template.

What decides the price of a worktop in Kidbrooke?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Where a partition has been built off the floor screed rather than off the slab, it moves, and a mitre bonded across that corner is the first thing to open. Where the wall cannot be made good, setting the stone deliberately proud on a subframe with a shadow gap reads as a detail rather than a bad fit. An upstand rides what a panel exposes. Any socket you intend to move must be moved and re-plastered before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece of stone. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Same slab run as the tops.
