Lamorbey kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s semiinterwar detached1960s low-rise flatspostwar terrace

A side passage and a back door mean the stone rarely has to come through the house, which changes the job more than most people expect. Old top out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon, with a plumber either side of us. Sound carcasses are the one condition.

Interwar housing around the park with rear kitchens and separate dining rooms; many have a side extension over the old garage, which gives a wide kitchen with an L and a small island rather than one long run.

Quiet roads with verges and drives, good turning space throughout, and school traffic around the park as the only timing issue. Side-extension kitchens mean the run crosses an old external wall, expect a step in the wall line and template for it.

The back door frequently opens straight into the kitchen, which is the best carry route in the house and the one people forget to mention. What catches people out is the junction between the old floor and the extension floor, which is rarely at the same level, so a run carrying across it needs the units packed before stone goes on. Units kept, surface changed, one day.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s semi, interwar detached, 1960s low-rise flats and postwar terrace. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop replacement, in short

  • The units stay. Only the surface changes.
  • Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
  • A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
  • The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

1930s and inter-war semis

The building, and what it does to the job

Base units that were never screwed back to the wall after an earlier refit, with the old laminate effectively holding the run together and square.

1930s and inter-war semis

The shape of the run

Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. Going from a 38mm laminate to 20mm or 30mm stone drops the surface, which shows against tiles, a window board and any freestanding appliance. Height change is checked before we cut.

What gets asked for here

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop installation. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

1930s and inter-war semis

True everywhere, stated once

Replacement is the most-searched worktop job in the UK and the one most shaped by the building it happens in. What the old top is hiding, and how the new stone gets through the door, is different in every kind of house.

Quiet roads with verges and drives, good turning space throughout, and school traffic around the park as the only timing issue.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop replacement in Lamorbey

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Lamorbey on your patch?

Yes. Lamorbey is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are DA15. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bexley. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop replacement in Lamorbey be any different from anywhere else?

Side-extension kitchens mean the run crosses an old external wall, expect a step in the wall line and template for it.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Lamorbey?

Quiet roads with verges and drives, good turning space throughout, and school traffic around the park as the only timing issue. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. The strip-out is planned around it.

Do you do much worktop replacement around Lamorbey?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop installation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The units stay and only the surface changes, so the whole job is one day rather than a kitchen refit. A day, not a project. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Two runs meeting at an internal corner is the most common shape we fit, and the corner is where the decisions are. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. The units stay, the surface changes. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Lamorbey?

Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. The laminate has been covering it up. Unlock the side gate and clear the alley of bins, bikes and pots, and arrange a plumber for the sink and an electrician if the hob is hard-wired. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. A plumber disconnects before we arrive and reconnects after we leave, and that is worth booking early. Sound carcasses are the condition.
