Longlands kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Taking the old tops off is also the first honest look at what has been going on underneath them. Sound carcasses are the one condition.
Semis and chalet bungalows on the slope down to the Cray valley. Bungalow kitchens are square with low ceilings and sills close to the worktop, while the semis follow the usual rear-kitchen-plus-dining-room plan.
Sloping residential roads with drives on most houses, though a few streets narrow sharply toward the railway with little turning space for a long van.
Where the roof has been converted there is usually a steel over the kitchen that went in after the walls, and the run beneath it is worth checking for square. The junction between the old floor and the extension floor is where a run crossing it needs packing before stone goes on. Units kept, surface changed, one day.
What turns up on the job sheets is 1930s semi, interwar chalet bungalow and postwar terrace. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop replacement, in short
- The units stay. Only the surface changes.
- Old tops come out in the morning, new stone is down and sealed the same day.
- A plumber disconnects the tap and waste before we arrive and reconnects at the end of the day.
- The carcasses have to be sound: stone is far heavier than laminate.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop installation and worktop templating.
1930s and inter-war semis
The building, and what it does to the job
Low window sills in the bungalows kill a standard 100mm upstand, so measure sill height at template stage.
A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one.
Base units that were never screwed back to the wall after an earlier refit, with the old laminate effectively holding the run together and square.
1930s and inter-war semis
True everywhere, stated once
Replacement is the most-searched worktop job in the UK and the one most shaped by the building it happens in. What the old top is hiding, and how the new stone gets through the door, is different in every kind of house.

Getting stone into a Longlands kitchen
Sloping residential roads with drives on most houses, though a few streets narrow sharply toward the railway with little turning space for a long van.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop replacement in Longlands
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Longlands on your patch?
Yes. Longlands is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are DA15. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bexley. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Waste is the part people forget: the old laminate or tired granite has to be walked back to the van and it does not get lighter. Old tops out and new stone in, both through the same gap. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop replacement in Longlands be any different from anywhere else?
Low window sills in the bungalows kill a standard 100mm upstand, so measure sill height at template stage.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Longlands?
Sloping residential roads with drives on most houses, though a few streets narrow sharply toward the railway with little turning space for a long van. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. We plan the strip-out and the carry as one movement so the kitchen is only out of use for a single day. The strip-out is planned around it.
Is worktop replacement the job you do most in Longlands?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop installation and worktop templating. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The carcasses have to be sound, because stone is several times the weight of what is coming off. A day, not a project. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Old tops out in the morning, new stone down and sealed the same afternoon. A day, not a project.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Old laminate has often been holding a run square for years, and taking it off shows what the units were really doing. Carcasses have to be sound first. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Longlands?
A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. The old top has been hiding it, so the first honest look at it happens when the laminate comes off. It is the usual surprise, and it is a known one. Unlock the side gate and clear the alley of bins, bikes and pots, and arrange a plumber for the sink and an electrician if the hob is hard-wired. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. A replacement keeps the units and changes the surface, which is the least disruptive way to do this in an occupied property. Units kept, surface changed.
