Stone bar tops in Myatt's Fields

A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Myatt's Fields kitchens

The buildings and streets around Myatt's Fields

Victorian terraceRebuilt estate housingInterwar block

Where the bar tops in Myatt's Fields get complicated is rarely the stone itself, and much more often the room the stone has to go into. Victorian terraces around the park have narrow rear additions where the kitchen stays a galley of about 2m wide, with the option of opening into the rear reception to gain a return. Rebuilt estate housing nearby has contemporary kitchens sized to modern regulations with an island only in the larger family units. Whichever of those your kitchen turns out to be, the job in Myatt's Fields runs the same way: survey, template, fit.

The carry is the constraint: a single stair with tight half-landings, or deck access with a long walk from the lift. Height is the other half of it, since a bar sits above the working plane and the knee room beneath is measured from the face of the frame, not from the edge of the stone. The bar is set level to itself and packed off the frame.

A minority of these are non-traditional precast types, and in those the inside face of the outer wall is a panel between columns rather than a masonry wall. Rooms in this stock are compact, so a bar usually replaces a table rather than sitting alongside one, and it is drawn for two or three stools with enough floor left to get past them. The apron is bonded on the bench, never built up in the room.

The mix here is Victorian terrace, Rebuilt estate housing and Interwar block. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.

True everywhere

Stone bar tops, in short

  • Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
  • The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
  • Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
  • A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place

Why Myatt's Fields is its own job

Stone is heavy, unforgiving and cut to a millimetre, so what governs a job in Myatt's Fields is everything around it. Streets around the park are quiet but tightly parked and permit-controlled, and several are one-way, so the approach matters. Terraced front doors are close to the pavement with a short path and a step up. In the narrow rear additions there is not enough width to swing a 600mm top into place flat, so it comes in on edge and gets lowered between the wall and the units. Both are settled at the template visit and written into the quote, so nothing about the day is discovered on your doorstep.

The work

What bar tops involves

The fitting workmanship carries the same five year guarantee as a kitchen worktop, and the support under the front edge is covered by it as much as the stone above is. Cut-outs for a bar sink, a drip tray or a socket through the surface are machined before anything leaves the workshop, so nothing is cut into a finished counter in the room. You are left with every visible face finished to one standard, the underside of the front edge included, which is the face a seated person looks straight at.

A bar top is a worktop that has been asked to do a different job, since it carries people on its front edge for hours at a time instead of taking pans off a hob. Flat steel is let in flush with the bearing face of the frame, so the stone still lands on a continuous plane rather than on a bar standing proud of everything else. Rooms are compact, so the counter takes the place of a table and is drawn for the stools the floor will genuinely clear. One visit, and the bar is usable that evening.

The money

What it costs in Myatt's Fields

Material choice moves the figure less than the detail does, and on a bar the detail means the apron, the radius and whatever sits under the front edge. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. The catalogue starts at £110 per square metre at the plainest end and reaches £550 at the top, supply only, with the same fabrication work sitting behind either choice. Nothing about the support is folded into the stone rate.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Myatt's Fields in the housing figures

On the Myatt's Fields streets we cover, owner-occupation is well below the London average. The route from kerb to door is fixed by the estate layout. An owner keeping the room asks how a chipped nose is dressed in place, and that answer shapes the edge profile. No cut edge is left on show anywhere.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

The shape of the run

Waterfall ends are cut in sequence off the length either side of the top so the vein carries down the leg, and that sequence is gone the moment a piece has to be recut. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. A raised tier is a second piece, priced and drawn as one.

What Myatt's Fields asks for

We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Access

Getting stone into a Myatt's Fields kitchen

Streets around the park are quiet but tightly parked and permit-controlled, and several are one-way, so the approach matters. Terraced front doors are close to the pavement with a short path and a step up.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Myatt's Fields

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Myatt's Fields on your patch?

Yes. Myatt's Fields is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE5, SW9. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Lambeth. Camera enforcement gives nobody the chance to explain, where an officer on foot at least sees a tail lift down and stone coming off it. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. Permits are sorted before a corbel is drilled. We come to the kitchen to template and again to fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What should I expect from bar tops in a Myatt's Fields kitchen?

Windows and doors were replaced across whole streets on one programme, so the kitchen window is a plastic frame in the old opening with a deep lined reveal. The one advantage here is the fabric: dense blockwork holds a fixing properly, which makes a wall-carried front edge realistic where a stud partition would not allow it at all. Piece length is capped by the way in and the support follows. Floors settle, and once base units are packed and levelled properly the stone sits true while everything else in the room admits it is not. On a bar that counts twice over, because the same obstruction has to be cleared by the stone above it and by the knees of whoever is sitting at it. The knee space is measured before the bracket is specified.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Myatt's Fields?

A step up off the pavement means the piece is lifted to the threshold before it is carried anywhere, and that first lift is the one that wants four hands. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Nothing about a front edge survives being dragged. Where a loading concession applies at all, it holds only while something is being carried, which makes it a way to unload rather than a way to park. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. The nose stays wrapped until the frame is ready for it.

Would you call Myatt's Fields a bar tops area?

No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. A worktop replacement between tenancies is a single-day job by design, because the flat is not earning while it is empty. A bar is nearly always the last thing added to a project, so it is templated on a visit of its own once the joinery around it has stopped moving. The evening use is what the piece is sized for. Agents book this work at short notice, because the void only becomes a real date once the outgoing tenant confirms they are going. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. Bars are quoted as their own item, never as extra metreage.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Everything on an island is fed from underneath, extraction, a socket run, a hob and sometimes a waste, and each of them wants its hole before the top is bonded down. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. The stool positions go on the drawing before the join does. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.

What state does a Myatt's Fields kitchen have to be in before you template?

A junction between an original floor and a later extension slab is almost never at the same level, so units carrying a run across it need packing first. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Where the wall is bowed the rear rail takes it up. Send a photograph of every corner of the room so we can see the boxings, the length you want, and how many stools you expect to use. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. Repairability at the nose is a fair question to ask early.

What happens if a piece is damaged on the fitting day?

Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. A dropped pan years later is a different question, and stone is remade rather than filled either way. The rest of the kitchen still goes in. One damaged piece does not hold up the pieces either side. A Victorian hall arch sits lower than the ceiling either side of it, and it is the point a piece carried on edge meets first. The steel and the corbels travel that same route and go in first, so a bar is three separate carries into one room rather than a single delivery. The corbels go in before the top does, and both use the same door.

Does a stone worktop need sealing?

Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. No maintenance visit is built into the job. Soap, water, and on the porous stones a seal. The window cill clears a worktop by very little, which settles how tall the upstand under it can be before anyone has drawn a thing. Space is tight, so a bar here tends to replace a table rather than sit alongside one, and the piece is drawn for two or three stools rather than a row of them. A garage floor slopes and the frame takes that up.

Can you machine drainer grooves into the stone?

Grooves are machined into the surface rather than applied to it, so there is nothing to come loose later. Grooves and an undermounted bowl are usually specified together, since the grooves are run to the bowl edge. Where there is no room for a separate drainer, grooves are usually what gets specified instead. Windows sit high and the sill line crosses the middle of the run, which limits what can go above the worktop. A bar top put into a room like that is an overhang question first, because the nose has to carry people leaning on it long after the slab has stopped being interesting. Everything under the nose is agreed before a slab is chosen.

What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?

Undermount bowls are cut and polished in the workshop and dry-fitted to the stone on the bench before anything is loaded. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. Island units are rarely fixed to anything at first fix, so they get screwed to the floor and levelled against the perimeter run before the stone is measured at all. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. A flush bar is one plane and twice the overhang problem.
