Reception counters and desks in North Acton

Yes. North Acton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W3, NW10. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Ealing. Underground loading has a height restriction, and a van with an A-frame on it is taller than the driver remembers. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. The longest counter piece decides the swing radius outside. We come to the kitchen to template and again to fit, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Underfloor heating in the screed means nothing is fixed into the floor, so an island is anchored to the carcasses alone. The lobby was finished by the developer, so the counter is scribed to stone, terrazzo or a boarded wall somebody else laid, and that face is measured rather than assumed square. Counters are nearly always one-offs, so the saving that comes from repeating a specification is not usually on the table here. The knee recess is not a variable between sites. The person choosing the worktop is not the person using it, and that shifts the balance from appearance towards running cost. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. A counter in a working building is an evening job.

Variation past what packing can take up has to be corrected in the carcasses before we cut, because the template records the units as they stand. Where a run meets an appliance, level decides whether that appliance door still clears the stone above it. Small variation is taken up by packing under the top on the fitting day. A stack boxed diagonally across a corner leaves a triangle of dead space, and the top is cut to that triangle rather than to a square return. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. A packer belongs under the joinery, never under the counter.

Grooves and an undermounted bowl are usually specified together, since the grooves are run to the bowl edge. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. On a porous stone the grooved area is sealed with the rest, and it gets wet more than anything else. The kitchen is usually part of the living space, so three edges are read from a sofa rather than from standing height at the sink. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. The desk is furniture, so all four edges get the same finish.

Taking the old tops off and disposing of them is its own line on the quote rather than something folded into the stone price. What comes out goes by the same route the new stone comes in by, which is why that route is walked before anything is lifted. The carcasses stay put. Only the surface changes. The goods lift has its own booking sheet, and a bay slot without a lift slot only gets the stone as far as the lobby. A reception fit is often booked outside opening hours precisely because that is when the kerb in front of the building is free. A bay suspension is a line on the quote, not a surprise.

A remade piece is cut from the same slab run wherever the slab allows, because a replacement from another batch will not match across a join. Our own installers do the carry, so there is nobody in the middle to argue with about it. Damage found on the bench never leaves the workshop, and damage on the carry is remade under the same cover. Managed buildings allow deliveries through the lift only between set hours, and a day that overruns them finishes with the last piece still on the pavement. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. Piece length is capped in the drawing office, not on the landing.
