North Cheam kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s semi1930s terraceflats above parade shopspost-war infill

Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. One visit, our own installers.

Bay-fronted inter-war semis on grid streets off the main road, with rear kitchens of about 3m that are frequently opened into the dining room for a longer L. The flats above the shopping parade have minimal galley kitchens with no natural light.

The A24 and A2043 carry heavy traffic with no stopping outside the parade, so shop-top flats are worked from a side road; the residential grid behind has driveways and easy parking. Shop-top flats here are reached by a single straight stair from the street with a low soffit at the top, so we measure the headroom as well as the tread width before sizing pieces.

A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. The carry is the easy part; the plaster around the old breast and the packing over a moved floor are not. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.

The mix here is 1930s semi, 1930s terrace, flats above parade shops and post-war infill. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

1930s and inter-war semis

The shape of the run

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Nothing is bonded until the whole run sits flat.

What gets asked for here

It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

1930s and inter-war semis

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Getting stone into a North Cheam kitchen

The A24 and A2043 carry heavy traffic with no stopping outside the parade, so shop-top flats are worked from a side road; the residential grid behind has driveways and easy parking.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in North Cheam

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is North Cheam on your patch?

Yes. North Cheam is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM3. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Sutton. Where the van can pull up level with the gate the pieces are handled the fewest times, which is what actually protects them. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop installation in North Cheam be any different from anywhere else?

These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. That is the shape of the day. Shop-top flats here are reached by a single straight stair from the street with a low soffit at the top, so we measure the headroom as well as the tread width before sizing pieces.

How would you get a worktop into a property in North Cheam?

The A24 and A2043 carry heavy traffic with no stopping outside the parade, so shop-top flats are worked from a side road; the residential grid behind has driveways and easy parking. Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

Do you do much worktop installation around North Cheam?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to North Cheam?

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. The back edge is eased in progressively rather than offered up once and forced. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
