Stone bar tops in Northfields

Yes. Northfields is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are W13, W5. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Ealing. A van waiting on a loading concession has somebody standing with it, because a vehicle left unattended is the one that collects the ticket. A bar fit runs longer than a worktop run, because the frame, the support and the stone are three stages and only the last of them is quick. The nose stays wrapped until the frame is ready for it. There is nothing to drive to and nothing to pick up, because both visits are to the property itself.

The back addition is a narrow two-storey outrigger with a single external wall, and the kitchen galley runs the length of it. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. The bar is packed level off the frame, not off the floor. Send the length you want, the number of stools, and photographs walking from the pavement through to the room, including the cellar stair if the bar is going down there. Some doors in a building need a consent letter and some need nothing at all, so the first question is which arrangement applies here rather than which one is usual. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. The radius on the nose is a decision, not a default.

A piece travels on edge, never flat, because on edge is how stone of that length carries its own weight. Each join is an item on the drawing, so the layout and the figure move together. A single long run down one side puts every cut-out in one piece, so the sink, the hob and any drainer grooves all take material out of the same length. The seating side is the part that decides the piece, because a stool at the open end puts a load on a corner that a wall would otherwise have been carrying. The bar is set out from the seat and worked back to the units.

Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Bleach and limescale remover harm a polished finish rather than clean it, whichever material is on the units. Granite is porous to varying degrees, so it is sealed when we fit it and topped up over the life of the worktop. A long piece has to come through the front door, down the hall, round the newel post and through a doorway with a step down into the addition. A bar in a house of this age is usually either the end of a through-lounge or a cellar conversion, and the cellar is the harder of the two because the headroom fixes the counter height before anybody else gets a say. Scribed at the back and free at the front.

The sink and hob are lifted out with the old top and kept aside if you are reusing them. An old stone top is heavier coming out than the new one is going in, and leaves in sections. Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. A short lunchtime window of control exists to keep commuters off the street, and it still catches a trade van standing there for an hour. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. The frame is checked before anything comes off the van.
