Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. Where the floor falls away across a lobby the carcass is packed level first, because the top cannot correct anything sitting under it. The back return follows the wall as the wall leans.

The grooves sit inside the depth of the top with stone left either side, so a shallow run limits them. They read strongly across a dark stone and are nearly invisible on a pale one, so look before deciding. Machining is permanent. If a later kitchen moves the sink, the grooves stay where they were cut. These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. Nothing about the knee space is left for the fitters to improvise.

Thickness has to be known before quoting, since it decides the edge, the cut-outs and what the units carry. How the slab has been stored is worth telling us, because stone kept flat is not stone off a rack. Stone cut to somebody else’s drawing cannot usefully be re-cut to yours. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. The apertures for cable and card readers are what changes between one desk and the next, and every change is a fresh drawing rather than a variation.
