The kitchen is usually a rear room extended into the garden, with the original external wall now standing inside the run. Most of these have a side passage and a back door, so a full-length piece can usually reach the kitchen without being cut down, and the piece sizing is driven by the slab rather than the route. Island jobs here regularly want a waterfall end and a hob cut-out in the same piece, so slab yield and vein matching drive the price more than the linear metres do.

Generous driveways, wide verged roads and space to park a van on the plot, which makes this some of the easiest slab access in the borough. Where the extension is fully across the rear, a side alley of only 700mm can still force a through-the-house carry, so check the flank before committing. The side passage is the measurement that matters, because a piece has to be carried flat down it and then turned in at the back door, and the turn is always tighter than the passage. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. It is settled on the bench, not on site.

Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match.

On a heavily veined stone the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab so the movement relates across the room. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Window boards and cills stand proud of the plaster, so the back edge of the top has to be plotted to where the units actually sit rather than to the wall. Internal corners are machined with a radius and polished, and kept well clear of any join or cut-out. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.
