Kitchens are compact and standardised, which makes the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines a larger share of the total than the stone. The notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius, because a square internal corner there is where a top fails. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Plan for narrow-format pieces here: the constraint is the lift and the flat door, not the kitchen, and a joint in the right place saves an aborted delivery.

Lift car depth decides whether a slab travels flat or on edge, and that measurement should be taken at survey, not on fitting day. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. The nest is laid out around that, with joins placed over cabinet gables and kept clear of every cut-out. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The stack boxing needs to be in its final form and the sink and hob on site before we machine, since a boxing that gets re-clad afterwards throws the notch out. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
