Roundshaw kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1970s estate housing1990s-2000s rebuilt estate housinglow-rise flatshousing association terrace

Kitchens in this stock are compact and reasonably square, which makes the fixed lines a larger share of the total than the material is. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

Built on the old Croydon Airport land and largely rebuilt since, so the housing is modern-estate standard: compact kitchens of around 2.7m in an open-plan or semi-open layout, with a washing machine in the run because there is no utility. Parking courts and pedestrian decks rather than roadside frontage, controlled bollards on some routes, and communal entrances to the flatted blocks with an intercom. With the washing machine in the worktop run the cut-outs sit close together, so the piece needs a support rail across the appliance gap or it will flex when the machine spins.

An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. Concrete and dense block walls in ex-council stock cannot be chased back or packed out to suit, so the template takes the wall exactly as it is and the stone carries the scribe. Two to three hours, once the units are in.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1970s estate housing, 1990s-2000s rebuilt estate housing, low-rise flats and housing association terrace. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our south London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

These kitchens tend to be compact and reasonably square, so the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines are a larger share of the total than the stone is. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Appliances on site, not on order.

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

ex-local-authority flats and estates

True everywhere, stated once

A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Getting stone into a Roundshaw kitchen

Parking courts and pedestrian decks rather than roadside frontage, controlled bollards on some routes, and communal entrances to the flatted blocks with an intercom.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop templating in Roundshaw

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Roundshaw on your patch?

Yes. Roundshaw is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SM6. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Sutton. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. Two hours is the realistic figure. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop templating in Roundshaw be any different from anywhere else?

Rear access through a garden or a shared path means long pieces can usually come in whole from the back. Unit height is the other issue: legs sit on an uneven screed or hard concrete with no give, so the template reads the top of every carcass rather than assuming they share a height. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. With the washing machine in the worktop run the cut-outs sit close together, so the piece needs a support rail across the appliance gap or it will flex when the machine spins.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Roundshaw?

Parking courts and pedestrian decks rather than roadside frontage, controlled bollards on some routes, and communal entrances to the flatted blocks with an intercom. Sign-in at the gate, a permit on the dash and a named contact are usually wanted before anything comes off the van. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. The template records it along with everything else.

Do you get much worktop templating work in Roundshaw?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. Units fitted, fixed and level first. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Roundshaw?

A boxed soil stack or service riser in the corner of a run eats into the worktop depth and has to be scribed around rather than cut square. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. Every base unit fixed to the wall, packed and levelled, and any dry-lining or patching completed - the template reads the wall face it is given, so that has to be the finished face. Where a landlord or housing provider is involved there is a specification to meet and a process to follow, and both are settled before a date is offered. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
