Roxbourne kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
There is nearly always a boxed soil stack or a service riser in a corner of the run, and it is rarely mentioned at enquiry. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
Repetitive interwar estate housing where every kitchen is effectively the same box, which makes it good like-for-like replacement territory: a 2.7m run with a return of about 1.2m and a back door in the corner.
Uniform stock means a template from one house nearly fits the next, but never assume it, because 1930s builders varied the back-door corner by an inch or two. Extensions are less common than in the wealthier Harrow districts, so footprints usually stay as built.
An ex-council house is solidly built to a standard plan, with the kitchen at the rear and a back door next to it. The stairwell half-landing is usually the tightest point on the whole route and it dictates the maximum piece. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
The buildings themselves are mostly 1930s estate semi, interwar terrace and 1960s maisonette block. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our north west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job
The stairwell half-landing turn, which is usually the tightest point on the whole route and dictates the maximum piece length.

What gets asked for here
A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. The prep list is not optional.
It is on the shortlist for this patch rather than at the top of it, because worktop replacement comes up more often. Nothing about the process differs between the two.

Getting stone into the room
Uniform estate roads with drives on many houses and consistent side gate widths, which makes access predictable; maisonette blocks need a shared external stair and a two-person lift up.

True everywhere, stated once
Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Roxbourne
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Roxbourne?
Yes. Roxbourne is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are HA2. It is worked on our north west London run, along with the rest of Harrow. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Roxbourne change how worktop installation works?
Rear access through a garden or a shared path means long pieces can usually come in whole from the back. The stairwell half-landing is usually the tightest point on the whole route and it dictates the maximum piece. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. Uniform stock means a template from one house nearly fits the next, but never assume it, because 1930s builders varied the back-door corner by an inch or two.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Roxbourne?
Uniform estate roads with drives on many houses and consistent side gate widths, which makes access predictable; maisonette blocks need a shared external stair and a two-person lift up. Rear access usually lets us fit longer pieces whole, so the join count ends up decided by the slab rather than by the building. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. That is what the morning is planned around.
Do you do much worktop installation around Roxbourne?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.
Why do two Roxbourne kitchens the same size price differently?
Where the return runs into a wall that is out of square, the corner is templated as the angle it really is rather than as ninety degrees. A layout that has been packed and levelled run by run instead of to one datum shows as a step where two pieces meet. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Anything that has to stay accessible, a stopcock, a gas meter, a riser panel, is marked on the template so the stone is cut around it instead of over it. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Reserve a space as close to the block entrance as possible and clear the landing and stairs of prams, bikes and stored items. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
