Ruxley kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Units are often only 500mm deep, so a standard 600mm stone top overhangs at the front and the doors need checking against it. Splashbacks come off the same slab run as the tops, which means the decision has to be made before fabrication starts. Siliconed to the top, never grouted.
Postwar detached houses and bungalows on the green-belt edge with square kitchens and a utility off the side; runs are 3m to 3.5m with a peninsula, and single-storey bungalow extensions are the common project.
Bungalow extension work here usually has a flat roof and rooflight over the run, so check headroom before quoting tall units and upstands.
The window sits in the middle of the run over the sink, and its board and cill set the limit on how tall an upstand can be. That step is exactly what an upstand covers and what a full-height panel exposes, so unless the wall is skimmed level end to end, a 100mm band is the reliable choice. Decided before fabrication starts.
What turns up on the job sheets is postwar detached, 1960s-70s estate housing and green-belt edge bungalow. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Splashbacks and upstands, in short
- Cut from the same slab run as the worktop, at the same time.
- Ordered later, from a different batch, the match is not reliable where the pieces meet.
- Socket and switch positions must be final before templating.
- The joint to the worktop is siliconed, never grouted.

Getting stone into the room
Fast main-road frontages on the bypass side, but the houses themselves have drives and generous frontages with no parking restrictions to speak of.

What gets asked for here
Managed stock usually comes with its own rules about working hours, waste, and who is allowed on site. Splashbacks are cut from the same slab run as the tops, so they have to be decided before fabrication, not after. The wall has to be ready.
Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Depth changes between patched and original plaster along the same wall, which show up as a tapering gap behind a tall splashback.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop splashbacks & upstands in Ruxley
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Ruxley?
Yes. Ruxley is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are DA14. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bexley. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. Splashbacks are normally the last thing off, so a short parking window is exactly when they get rushed. One trip is always better than three. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Ruxley change how worktop splashbacks & upstands works?
The window sits in the middle of the run over the sink, and its board and cill set the limit on how tall an upstand can be. That step is exactly what an upstand covers and what a full-height panel exposes, so unless the wall is skimmed level end to end, a 100mm band is the reliable choice. Decided before fabrication starts. Bungalow extension work here usually has a flat roof and rooflight over the run, so check headroom before quoting tall units and upstands.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Ruxley?
Fast main-road frontages on the bypass side, but the houses themselves have drives and generous frontages with no parking restrictions to speak of. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. Where the route is tight we break a long splashback at a natural vertical joint instead of forcing one panel through. That is agreed at template, not on fitting day.
Is Ruxley really a worktop splashbacks & upstands area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Socket and switch positions have to be final before templating, because a cut-out in the wrong place means a new piece. Sockets final before template. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Ordered later from a different batch, the match is not reliable exactly where the pieces meet. Siliconed to the worktop, never grouted.
Why do two Ruxley kitchens the same size price differently?
The free end is what needs deciding early: square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall to the floor, and a waterfall is cut in sequence off the same part of the slab. Long runs almost never take a single panel, so the joint positions want agreeing before anything is templated. Joint placement is a decision, not an accident. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. It is usually what pushes a job towards a 100mm upstand instead of a full-height panel, because an upstand rides what a panel exposes. Make the wall good first, or accept the detail. Boiler position, flue and any pipework drops must be settled and the wall skimmed level before templating the splashback run. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. A 100mm upstand is the low-maintenance answer, and full-height stone is the one that has to be committed to early. Same slab run as the tops.
