Ruxley kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

postwar detached1960s-70s estate housinggreen-belt edge bungalow

Small, roughly square kitchens with a back door and a window in the middle of the run: short lengths, few joins, and a lot to work around. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. One visit, our own installers.

Postwar detached houses and bungalows on the green-belt edge with square kitchens and a utility off the side; runs are 3m to 3.5m with a peninsula, and single-storey bungalow extensions are the common project.

Bungalow extension work here usually has a flat roof and rooflight over the run, so check headroom before quoting tall units and upstands.

Walls look modern and are not: block or breeze with a skim that has been patched over decades, so dry-laying and scribing still apply. Rear or shared-path access is often the only way to bring a long piece in without turning it in the hall. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted.

On these streets the housing is postwar detached, 1960s-70s estate housing and green-belt edge bungalow. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

Of everything we do around here, this is the one that comes up most, with worktop design & quotation and worktop templating behind it.

period detached houses and villas

Getting stone into the room

Fast main-road frontages on the bypass side, but the houses themselves have drives and generous frontages with no parking restrictions to speak of.

A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. We would rather ask than guess.

The building, and what it does to the job

The rear or shared-path access, which is often the only way to bring in a long piece without turning it in the hall.

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Ruxley

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Ruxley?

Yes. Ruxley is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are DA14. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bexley. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Ruxley change how worktop installation works?

The window sits in the middle of the run over the sink, and its board and cill set the limit on how tall an upstand can be. Access is generally through the front door and a short straight hall into the kitchen, which is a good deal kinder than a Victorian terrace, though rear access through a back garden or shared path is often the better route if it exists. That is the shape of the day. Bungalow extension work here usually has a flat roof and rooflight over the run, so check headroom before quoting tall units and upstands.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Ruxley?

Fast main-road frontages on the bypass side, but the houses themselves have drives and generous frontages with no parking restrictions to speak of. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. None of it is worked out on the doorstep.

Is worktop installation the job you do most in Ruxley?

Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop design & quotation and worktop templating. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. Sealed before we leave.

Why do two Ruxley kitchens the same size price differently?

A peninsula is an island with one end tied to a run, which means the join between them has to be planned rather than allowed to happen. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A low sill over the sink run is what decides between an upstand and stone dying into a window board, and there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. It is the slow part of the day and it should be. Unlock any rear or shared path gate and clear both the hall and the back approach so we can choose the better route on the day. Consent for the work sits with the freeholder or the managing body, and getting it in writing first avoids a crew arriving to a locked door. Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door, communal or otherwise. Protection goes down first.
