If you have had one quote for stone table top work in Selsdon and it did not match the next one, the difference is usually sitting in the room itself. Built largely as a 1930s estate, so the semis share a footprint with a small rear kitchen that is usually extended to the side or rear for a kitchen-diner with a peninsula. The detached houses on the higher roads run to proper islands and separate utilities. Whichever of those your kitchen turns out to be, the job in Selsdon runs the same way: survey, template, fit.

Crittall windows were swapped for plastic ones in openings that were made good rather than rebuilt, which leaves reveals that are neither straight nor equal. What a table top needs from us is a size, a shape and the base plate it has to be drilled to, and very little else. A dining room is a batch, and a batch is one slab run.

The classic arrangement is the original back room with a later extension bolted onto it, so the kitchen is two ages of building in one room. The units are wider than an older shopfront and take a proper run of two-seaters down one wall, which is where a repeated size earns its keep. Terraces and gardens live outdoors all year.

What the job sheets keep listing is 1930s estate semi, 1930s detached, post-war Selsdon Vale housing and bungalow. The template reads them differently even where the layout looks identical.

True everywhere

Restaurant and cafe table tops, in short

  • Every edge is profiled and polished, because every edge is visible and touchable.
  • Fixing centres are drilled to the base plate you already have, so bring us one or its drawing.
  • Thicker stone or a mitred edge reads as a heavier table without adding much weight to lift.
  • Round and oval tops are cut on the CNC, not by hand, so the curve is true all the way round.

The place

Why Selsdon is its own job

People who have already had stone fitted in Selsdon will know most of what follows, and will know why we ask. Wide inter-war roads with front drives and space to unload, but the ground rises steeply towards Selsdon Wood and some driveways climb hard from the kerb. Steep front drives here are the recurring nuisance, because a loaded trolley wants to run away downhill and we end up hand-carrying pieces we could otherwise wheel. It goes on the drawing, you agree the drawing, and the workshop cuts to that. Nothing is decided on the day.

The work

What restaurant table tops involves

Spare tops are worth ordering with the set. A matching replacement is straightforward while the slab run is still in stock and a lottery once it is not. Delivery is timed around service. The pieces arrive on edge in a frame, get checked off against the plan, and go onto their bases in the order the room fills. You end up with an edge that survives chair backs, because it is profiled and polished on every face rather than cut square and left as it came off the saw.

The work is a batch: a dining room orders tops by the dozen, and they have to come off the same run of slab to match each other. The underside takes the same seal as the face wherever the stone is porous, because a table is wiped from every direction. Where covers spill onto the pavement, the outdoor pieces are quoted in a different material from the indoor ones. Marked, wrapped and delivered table by table.

The money

What it costs in Selsdon

A table order is priced per top and the count matters more than the area, because each piece carries its own perimeter of finished edge and its own drilling. An island is a yield question before it is a design one: it either comes out of the same slab as the perimeter or it needs a second. The supply band of £110 to £550 per square metre is known the day you choose a colour. What is not known until the template is the piece count and the number of cut-outs. A spare now costs less than a match later.

What Selsdon asks for

A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop templating. The work is quoted the same way regardless.

Selsdon in the housing figures

On the Selsdon streets we cover, the stock is mostly in the hands of the people living in it. The scribe allowance is smaller than the London average. Pieces bolted to your own pedestals count as loose furniture, so they leave with the operator rather than staying with the building. Nothing is ordered on the strength of a photograph.

ex-local-authority flats and estates

The carry, and what it rules out

On a drive that only takes one vehicle nose-in, the van has to reverse the whole length of it to get back out, which decides which way it goes in. Empty frames and packaging go back on the van the same trip, because the dining room has to be laid up again that evening. Frames come off before pallets so the floor stays clear.

Getting stone into a Selsdon kitchen

Wide inter-war roads with front drives and space to unload, but the ground rises steeply towards Selsdon Wood and some driveways climb hard from the kerb.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Selsdon

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Selsdon?

Yes. Selsdon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR2. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. The distance from the standing to the actual kitchen door is the number that counts, since plenty of drives finish at a side gate and a garden path. A table order comes off the van as a stack of frames and a pallet of bases, and both of those need somewhere to stand before either is moved. Loading rules are confirmed with the operator beforehand. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Is there anything about Selsdon buildings that catches restaurant table tops out?

A side alley and a back door mean most pieces go in whole, and it is the alley width rather than the front door that decides it. Parades of this period usually keep a service road or a yard behind them, so a full order can arrive at the back and the dining room stays laid up while it does. Converted houses mean several sizes, not one. Where a breast interrupts a long wall the join can often go there, so it reads as a natural break rather than a line in the middle of a worktop. None of that is scribed against on a table, since it stands clear of every wall, so the awkwardness moves from the back edge to the floor and the base. Nothing is trimmed on site to make it fit.

What do you check about the route into a Selsdon property?

A short hard approach with no steps means a full-length piece can be walked in flat by two people rather than turned up on edge. A table order is many small pieces rather than one long one, so the route decides how many trips the delivery takes rather than how big anything can be. A lift takes a loaded frame or it takes nothing. Deep gravel takes the wheels of a loaded trolley and holds them, so either boards go down or the pieces are carried. The bases are the heavy half of the delivery, so the pallet is dealt with first while there are still hands free for it. An unload that overruns costs a service, so it does not.

Do you get much restaurant table tops work in Selsdon?

Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Table work arrives as a batch by its nature, and a batch means one slab run rather than the same colour ordered twice a year apart. Turnover between operators rarely changes the pedestals. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. A room opening in a second phase is worth naming now, while the material is still on the ground and a match is a telephone call. Match it now or hunt for it later.

Why do two Selsdon kitchens the same size price differently?

Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. A table top answers to none of that, since it meets no wall and needs no scribe, but the pieces come off the same slab as the counter and the colour has to carry across both. Colour is matched across the room, not table by table. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. A column, a boxed duct or a fixed bench in a dining room is designed around with a shape cut to suit rather than notched on site. What the room does to the base matters more than the wall. Confirm how many covers go outside, and tell us whether the outdoor bases share the pattern of the indoor ones, since they often do not. Because the money comes out of a household rather than a maintenance budget, phasing is common: tops now, island or splashbacks later, quoted so the second visit still matches the first. A table top bolted to a base you already own is loose furniture rather than a fixture, so it leaves with the operator at the end of a term. Who pays and who approves are worth naming early.

Is a drainer groove worth it in a small Selsdon kitchen?

The alternative stands on the surface, so the choice is losing worktop permanently or only while you are draining. A groove set is its own item on the quote rather than something rolled in with the sink cut-out. Grooves are machined in the workshop at the same time as the bowl cut-out, because they cannot be done well in a kitchen. Ceilings are lath and plaster at the front and plasterboard in the extension, and the join between the two marks where the original back wall stood. Table tops sit outside all of that, because a top touches no wall at all and every one of its edges is profiled, polished and on show. No wall behind it, so nothing about it is hidden.

Is taking the old top off part of the job?

Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. The carcasses stay. Only the surface changes. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Block paving bedded on sand can rut under a fully loaded van, and that is said to the customer beforehand rather than explained afterwards. Where the standing is short the pieces are counted off at the tail lift against the plan rather than checked once they are already inside. The bay is booked against the fitting date, not the week.

Can the price change after templating?

What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. What moves the figure after templating is a change you make: a different edge, an extra cut-out, a bigger sink chosen late. An alcove is commonly wider at the back than at the front, so a piece cut to the opening drops in and then stands off the rear wall. Where a floor falls away, the levelling is done by winding out the feet under each base rather than by packing anything under the stone. A thin top over a wide plate wants a pad underneath.

Are hob and sink cut-outs priced separately on a Selsdon quote?

A sit-on sink and an undermounted one are different cut-outs, so which it is gets settled before the template. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. The tap hole is drilled in the workshop too, and its position depends on how far the tap has to swing. An island carries its own edge detail all the way round, so a mitred 100mm apron on four sides is four mitres cut, bonded and polished before the piece ever leaves the bench. Rounds waste the corners of their blank where squares do not, so the mix of shapes moves the slab count more than the number of covers does. Veining is laid out so no two pieces read as a pair.
