Selsdon kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Solid brick with a sand and cement render is firm to work against and reliably out of plumb across the length of a run. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Units fitted, fixed and level first.
Built largely as a 1930s estate, so the semis share a footprint with a small rear kitchen that is usually extended to the side or rear for a kitchen-diner with a peninsula. The detached houses on the higher roads run to proper islands and separate utilities.
The classic arrangement is the original back room with a later extension bolted onto it, so the kitchen is two ages of building in one room. Where the room has been knocked through to the dining room or opened into a later extension, the two floors rarely sit at the same level and the whole opening has to be shot across from one datum. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
On these streets the housing is 1930s estate semi, 1930s detached, post-war Selsdon Vale housing and bungalow. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop design & quotation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.
ex-local-authority flats and estates
The building, and what it does to the job
Steep front drives here are the recurring nuisance, because a loaded trolley wants to run away downhill and we end up hand-carrying pieces we could otherwise wheel.

Getting stone into the room
Wide inter-war roads with front drives and space to unload, but the ground rises steeply towards Selsdon Wood and some driveways climb hard from the kerb.

The shape of the run
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. Real angles, not plan angles.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in Selsdon
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Selsdon on your patch?
Yes. Selsdon is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are CR2. It is worked on our south London run, along with the rest of Croydon. A drive that shelves towards the house needs the van chocked and the trolley controlled, since a loaded A-frame gathers speed quickly on a slope. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop templating in Selsdon be any different from anywhere else?
The classic arrangement is the original back room with a later extension bolted onto it, so the kitchen is two ages of building in one room. The sill height over the sink is settled on site, because there is often less clearance than an upstand is tall. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Steep front drives here are the recurring nuisance, because a loaded trolley wants to run away downhill and we end up hand-carrying pieces we could otherwise wheel.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Selsdon?
Wide inter-war roads with front drives and space to unload, but the ground rises steeply towards Selsdon Wood and some driveways climb hard from the kerb. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. The template records it along with everything else.
Is worktop templating common in Selsdon?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. Appliances on site, not on order. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. A layout templated off one wall instead of one datum will not sit right once all the pieces are down together. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Selsdon?
The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. No stone is cut from a plan.
