Most worktop complaints are not about stone. They are about a company going quiet between the deposit and the fitting date. So here is the whole process written down, including the parts that are your job rather than ours.
Steps one to three cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. Step four is where the room is measured properly and the deposit is taken. Steps five and six happen inside 5 to 10 working days, and step seven is the one most companies do not bother with.

The process
What happens at every stage, and who has to do it

Tell us about the kitchen
Plans, a sketch or photographs with rough run lengths. We come back with a range before anybody gets in a van.
You do not need drawings to start. A photograph of the room with a tape measurement written along each run tells us most of what we need for a first number. Better still, if you have a kitchen plan from a supplier, send that.
We read it for the things that move a price: how many corners, whether an island has an overhang, whether a window sill sits inside a run, whether there are drainer grooves. Then we come back the same working day with an indicative range, so you find out whether we are in the right conversation before anyone visits.

Choose your surface
Order the samples you are seriously considering and look at them in your own kitchen, at night, under your own lights.
There are 181 surfaces in the range across quartz, granite and sintered stone, from £110/m² supply at the entry point. Narrowing that down on a screen is hard, which is why quartz samples are free and sent to your door.
Look at them where the kitchen actually is, next to the door colour and the flooring, in the evening under your own lighting. Showroom lighting flatters every slab ever quarried. And we will tell you where a cheaper surface does the same job. The gap between a mid-range quartz and the top of the range is usually about pattern, not performance.
Worth knowing
- Quartz: engineered, non-porous, consistent from slab to slab
- Granite: quarried, every slab different, untroubled by heat off the hob
- Dekton and sintered stone: ultra-compact and thin enough for fine mitred edges

Fixed written quote
Every cut-out, edge, upstand and join itemised, with the supply rate shown separately from the work.
The quote is a list, not a number. Square metres per run against the supply rate for your chosen slab, then the edge profile, each cut-out, the joins, the upstands or splashbacks by the metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting as their own lines. If you drop something later, you can see exactly what comes off.
Approve it and that is what you pay. The only two things that move it are a change you make to the specification, or a room that measures differently at template from the plan we quoted against. In either case you get the revised number before a slab is cut, not an invoice afterwards.

Template
Two to three hours on site
The room is plotted digitally once your units are fitted and level. This visit is where the deposit is taken and your fitting date is fixed.
A templater plots your kitchen as it actually is: every wall angle, every bow in the plaster, every return that is not quite square. The drawing that comes off it is what the cutting machine follows. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
It takes two to three hours for a typical kitchen, longer with an island or several returns. While we are there you agree the join positions, the overhangs and the tap hole placement standing in the room rather than finding out later. You sign off the drawing, the deposit is taken, and the fabrication slot is booked with your fitting date attached to it.
Worth knowing
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level before we can template
- A Belfast or butler sink has to be installed and set at its final height first
- Your sink, tap and hob need to be on site: we machine to the physical item
- Somebody has to be there who can sign off the join positions
Fabrication
Cut, mitred and polished to your template, then dry-assembled on the bench with the sink and hob dry-fitted.
Your pieces are laid out on the actual slab first. On a material with real movement in it, that layout decides whether a vein runs through a join or stops dead at it. Then it is cut to the template drawing, mitred where the edge detail calls for it, and polished to match the factory face.
Before anything is loaded, the kitchen is assembled on the bench: runs laid out together, joins pulled up, your sink dropped into its aperture and the hob offered up. Anything wrong is found there, where it costs an hour, instead of in your kitchen where it costs a day and a slab.
Worth knowing
- Joins placed over a cabinet gable, never spanning an unsupported gap or a cut-out
- Finished joins are typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush
- Sink and hob dry-fitted before dispatch
- Upstands and splashbacks cut from the same slab run at the same time
Installation
Scribed to your walls, joins pulled and sanded flush, sink and hob seated and sealed, then cleaned down.
Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door. Pieces are dry-laid, the back edges scribed to the real line of your walls, then bedded and levelled onto the units. Joins are drawn up, bonded with colour-matched adhesive and sanded flush so there is nothing to feel under your hand.
The sink and hob are seated into the stone and sealed. They are not connected. That is a plumber and an electrician, and they should be booked after us rather than alongside us, because fresh silicone needs to cure before it takes water. The balance is due before installation, so fitting day is about the work.

- Parking close to the property matters: every piece is carried in by hand

Our lead time promise
Templated to fitted in 5 to 10 working days
Not three to seven days from your enquiry, but from the day we template. That is the only measurement of lead time that means anything, because it is the only point at which the work can actually start.
Most of the trade quotes seven to ten working days for the same stage. The reason is usually that the company you bought from is not the company cutting the stone: your kitchen goes into a queue at a fabricator who has never spoken to you. We cut in our own workshop, so the only queue is ours and we can see the whole of it.
The three things that move it
- A surface we have to bring in rather than one already in stock
- A specification change made after the template has been signed off
- A template visit that had to be abandoned because the kitchen was not ready, which restarts the clock from the rebooked date
If any of those happen we tell you the same day. Silence is the thing people actually complain about.
Template day
The prep checklist, so the visit is not wasted
Run this the day before, not on the morning. If one line is not true, the template cannot be taken and the lead time restarts from the rebooked date.
If you are not certain about any of it, send us a photograph of the units the day before. We would far rather move an appointment than send a templater to a kitchen that is not ready.
Ready before we arrive
Two to three hours on site
- All base units fitted, fixed to the wall and levelled on their final feet
- Belfast or butler sink installed and set at its finished height
- Sink, tap and hob physically on site: boxed is fine, a listing on a website is not
- Appliances that sit under the worktop present, or their exact dimensions confirmed
- End panels and any tall unit that a run dies into already fitted
- Walls plastered and at their final thickness (tiling comes after the worktop)
- Sockets and switches in their final positions if you are having a splashback
- Worktops clear, with room to work along every run
- Somebody on site for two to three hours who can make decisions
Paying for it
Deposit at template, balance before installation
Two payments, both at points where something concrete has happened. Nobody should be asking you for a large sum before they have measured the room.

Indicative range, samples and the full itemised written quote all cost nothing. There is no charge for a site visit at this stage and no obligation attached to any of it.

Taken once you have signed off the template drawing. That is the point the slab is committed to your kitchen and the workshop slot is booked, so it is the first point at which money is fair to ask for.
Balance
Before installation
Settled before the fitting day rather than on the doorstep, so nobody is doing sums while a worktop is being carried through the house.
Your quote sets out both amounts before you commit to anything, and the figure you approve is the figure you pay unless you change the specification or the room measures differently at template.

Aftercare, which is where most companies stop reading
The job is not finished when the van leaves. A stone worktop has a couple of genuine weaknesses, and knowing them on day one is worth more than any warranty document.
A care guide for your stone, not a generic leaflet
Quartz, granite and sintered surfaces do not want the same treatment. Engineered quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing. Natural granite is a quarried stone and some finishes benefit from a resealing routine. Your guide says which category yours falls into and what to clean it with.
What actually damages a stone worktop
Almost never a knife. It is chemical and thermal: oven cleaner, drain unblocker, paint stripper or bleach left sitting on the surface, and on engineered quartz a pan straight off a gas ring. Use a trivet, wipe anything caustic straight away, and the surface will outlast the kitchen around it.
If you chip an edge, ring before you fill it
Chips in stone can often be repaired in place. A tube of filler applied first makes a proper repair harder and more visible, so call us and describe it before anything goes near it.
The same company answers the phone
We templated it, we cut it and we fitted it, so there is nobody to be referred to. The 5-year workmanship guarantee covers our fabrication and fitting, for every kitchen we fit, and the 25-year material warranty covers the stone itself against manufacturing defects (residential installations).
If something does not look right, ring us in the first week rather than living with it for a year. It is easier to put right while we still have your template drawing on the bench, and we would rather know.

What people ask before they commit

01How long does the whole process take?
Fitting happens 5 to 10 working days after we template. How long the stage before that takes is set by your kitchen rather than by us, because we cannot template until the units are fitted and level. Quotation and sample stages usually run alongside your kitchen fit rather than after it.
02When do I have to pay, and how much?
Nothing at enquiry, nothing for samples and nothing for the written quote. A deposit is taken at the template visit once you have signed off the drawing, and the balance is settled before installation. We do not ask for money before we have seen and measured the room.
03What happens if my kitchen is not ready on template day?
We cannot take the template, because a template taken off unfinished units produces a worktop that does not fit. We rebook, and the lead time restarts from the new template date, which usually costs a week. If you are unsure the day before, send a photograph of the units and we will tell you honestly whether to keep the appointment.
04Do I need to be at home?
For the template, yes: join positions, overhangs and tap hole placement are agreed and signed off on the day. For installation, somebody needs to be on site with access for the whole visit, but it does not have to be you.
05Can you fit worktops before the kitchen units go in?
No. Stone is cut once, to the millimetre, from a template taken off the units as installed. Any company offering to template from a plan or from units that are not yet fixed is moving the risk of a misfit onto you.
06Do you connect the sink, tap and hob?
We seat and seal them into the stone. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics. That is a plumber and an electrician, booked after us rather than alongside us, because fresh silicone needs to cure before the sink takes water.
