Stepney Green kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Georgian merchant houselate-Victorian mansion dwellingpost-war infill block

Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Pieces are cut, mitred, machined and dry-assembled on the bench before anything is loaded onto a van. Joins over gables, always.

The Georgian houses put the kitchen in the lower ground or rear ground floor with low ceilings, thick masonry and a run of around 3m broken by a chimney breast. Victorian mansion flats have a small original kitchen with a deep window reveal and a larder recess that people keep and shelve out.

Several of the older houses are listed or in a conservation area, so scaffolding, hoisting and any external route need agreeing in advance.

Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out.

The buildings themselves are mostly Georgian merchant house, late-Victorian mansion dwelling and post-war infill block. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop fabrication, in short

  • Slabs come in finite sizes, so a long run needs a join.
  • Joins sit over a cabinet gable, never spanning a gap or running through a cut-out.
  • A finished join is typically 2–3mm, colour-matched and sanded flush.
  • Your sink and hob are dry-fitted on the bench before dispatch.

Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

Old masonry walls bow and the chimney breast is never plumb, so template on the finished plaster and expect deep scribes on both ends of the run.

Getting stone into the room

Front steps up to a raised entrance and a narrow original hallway mean a slab has to come in on edge and turn at the stair foot.

Hoisting is planned at quote stage or not at all, because the crew, the equipment and the permissions are three separate bookings. Getting that wrong leaves a finished, machined piece that cannot reach the room, which is a remake rather than a trim. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

What gets asked for here

This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop templating. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Getting stone into a Stepney Green kitchen

Several of the older houses are listed or in a conservation area, so scaffolding, hoisting and any external route need agreeing in advance. Front steps up to a raised entrance and a narrow original hallway mean a slab has to come in on edge and turn at the stair foot.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop fabrication in Stepney Green

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Is Stepney Green on your patch?

Yes. Stepney Green is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E1. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets. A free-parking street with cars both sides can still leave the van forty metres away, and that distance is carry, not driving. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. That is the last thing settled before dispatch. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Why would worktop fabrication in Stepney Green be any different from anywhere else?

Listing and conservation conditions apply to a good number of these, which constrains what can be altered around the kitchen rather than what goes on top of the units. The other constraint is the hall: a piece has to come through the front door, round the newel at the foot of the stairs and through a doorway into the back kitchen, so we size the pieces to the tightest turn on that route before we nest anything, which sometimes means splitting a run that would otherwise have gone in whole. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Old masonry walls bow and the chimney breast is never plumb, so template on the finished plaster and expect deep scribes on both ends of the run.

How would you get a worktop into a property in Stepney Green?

Several of the older houses are listed or in a conservation area, so scaffolding, hoisting and any external route need agreeing in advance. Front steps up to a raised entrance and a narrow original hallway mean a slab has to come in on edge and turn at the stair foot. If a hoist is the only way in then the piece sizes are designed around the opening, and the sash or casement usually has to come out first. So the nesting is worked to the measured route first and to the slab second. The drawing carries that decision through to the saw.

Do you do much worktop fabrication around Stepney Green?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop templating. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Cutting several kitchens from different slabs and calling them matched is where firms get caught out. Same slab run, or it is not a match. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Pieces are dry-assembled and checked on the bench before anything is loaded. Proven on the bench before dispatch.

What moves the number on a quote around here?

Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What needs to be ready before you come to Stepney Green?

A chimney breast left in place splits a wall into two alcoves, and the two are rarely the same width and rarely parallel to each other. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
