Upminster kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
These kitchens have usually been retiled twice and knocked through once, and both of those leave marks the worktop has to deal with. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. One visit, our own installers.
Larger inter-war detached and semi-detached houses with deep gardens, so full-width rear extensions with lanterns are very common and kitchens end up as 5-6m long spaces with a 3m island and a separate boot room or utility.
Clients here often specify a second stone surface for the utility and a matching bar top in the garden room. The garden route in is usually the best one, but the ground is soft and the new patio is often just laid, so we board the route before wheeling anything heavy over it.
A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
What we are usually templating in is Edwardian house, 1930s semi, 1930s detached and post-war detached. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Broad roads, long driveways and side gates wide enough for a trolley, so most Upminster jobs are loaded off the drive straight into the extension via the garden.

What gets asked for here
The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. One visit, done properly.
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop design & quotation. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Upminster
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Upminster?
Yes. Upminster is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM14. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Havering. Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. A van that has to move mid-fit costs the best part of an hour and takes a man off the tools to do it. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Upminster change how worktop installation works?
A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. The fitting itself is slower than the carry: original plaster on the party wall and around the old chimney breast is rarely square to the run, so back scribes get cut on site, and where a return wraps into a breast recess we template that shoulder tight and ease it in. That is the shape of the day. The garden route in is usually the best one, but the ground is soft and the new patio is often just laid, so we board the route before wheeling anything heavy over it.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Upminster?
Broad roads, long driveways and side gates wide enough for a trolley, so most Upminster jobs are loaded off the drive straight into the extension via the garden. Garden routes carry their own hazards: a drain cover, a step up to a patio, wet decking, or a lawn that will not take a loaded trolley. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. That is what the morning is planned around.
Is worktop installation common in Upminster?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. One visit, done properly. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. The prep list is not optional.
Why do two Upminster kitchens the same size price differently?
If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Eased in, never forced. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
