Stone bar tops in Upper Clapton
A bar top takes weight on its front edge all evening, so the overhang and what carries it matter more than the slab does.

Upper Clapton kitchens
The buildings and streets around Upper Clapton
A good quote for stone bar top work in Upper Clapton reads like a description of your kitchen rather than a price list, and that is deliberate. Larger Victorian villas, many divided into flats or in multiple occupation, alongside interwar blocks with small fixed kitchens. Where houses are whole the kitchen is a big rear room and the client usually wants a long run plus an island rather than a galley. Old kitchens rarely announce what they are. That is why somebody comes out and looks before a price is written.
Deep skirtings, a dado and a picture rail survive in the original rooms, so nothing sits flat to the wall without being cut around first. What carries a bar top here is rarely a kitchen carcass, so the framing underneath gets looked at before anything is measured across the top of it. A bar top is a structural piece with a polished face on it.
There is a door to the garden, a door to the hall and often a door to a utility, so the perimeter run is interrupted three times. A deep apron on the front makes the piece read heavier from a seat, and it is mitred and bonded on the bench rather than built up in the room. Old floors move, so the bar is fixed back as well as down.
The mix here is Victorian villa, Edwardian terrace, 1930s block and post-war estate. Knowing which one it is before we arrive is half the survey done.
True everywhere
Stone bar tops, in short
- Anything past about 300mm of unsupported overhang gets steel or a corbel underneath.
- The front edge is the one people touch, so it is profiled and polished on all exposed faces.
- Quartz is the usual choice indoors; porcelain and sintered stone where drinks and citrus are constant.
- A bar top is fitted level to itself, not to the floor, because floors in older buildings rarely are.

The place
Why Upper Clapton is its own job
Because we work across Upper Clapton rather than one street of it, we know which questions are worth asking up front. The streets running down towards the Lea are long and narrow with permit parking both sides, and Upper Clapton Road is busy with buses. Divided villas have shared halls with several front doors and staircases that have been rebuilt more than once. In divided villas the stairs have often been altered for the conversion, so head height at the turn is lower than the original suggests and needs checking with a board before sizing anything. Three to seven working days sit between the template and the fit, and everything difficult gets solved in that gap.
The work
What bar tops involves
Material choice is part of it: quartz for most indoor bars, porcelain or sintered stone where citrus, wine and strong cleaning products land on the surface every day. Where the front edge reaches past what the frame will carry, flat steel is let in flush with the bearing face or corbels are fixed to structure, and which of the two is agreed with you rather than decided on the morning. You end up with a surface chosen for what gets put down on it, so a wet glass standing all evening and a slice of lemon are not the things that spoil it.
Stone bar tops divide into two kinds of work: a home bar built into a room somebody lives in, and a trade counter that has to survive a service every night. Anything beyond roughly 300mm of unsupported projection gets flat steel let into the frame or corbels beneath it, and which of the two is a decision about how the piece reads from a seat. There is room here for a rear counter as well, so the sink, the shelving and the top are drawn as a single piece of joinery instead of three separate items. Drawn from the stool and worked back to the wall.

The money
What it costs in Upper Clapton
A bar is quoted as joinery and stone together, so the frame, the support and the top each appear on the sheet instead of being folded into a rate for the surface. Two facing runs mean two sets of edges and two scribes in a small span, which is why a compact galley rarely prices as cheaply as its area suggests. Thickness, finish and colour move a slab within the £110 to £550 supply band before anyone touches it, so that figure is settled by what you pick rather than by the room. You see what the projection costs before agreeing to it.

The carry, and what it rules out
Stone goes up on edge, and it is the half-landing turn rather than the flight itself that sets the maximum piece. A bar is usually one of the last pieces to go in, so the route has to still be clear on a day when the rest of the room is finished. The nose is the corner that gets caught, so it travels padded.

Upper Clapton in the housing figures
On these streets this is overwhelmingly let and managed property. No two kitchens are set out alike. An owner keeping the room asks how a chipped nose is dressed in place, and that answer shapes the edge profile. Corbels chosen, not simply supplied.

What Upper Clapton asks for
We rank the domestic jobs against a neighbourhood's building stock, and this is not one of them. For the record, the stock here asks for worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. The commercial work is surveyed and fitted to the same standard.

Getting stone into an Upper Clapton kitchen
The streets running down towards the Lea are long and narrow with permit parking both sides, and Upper Clapton Road is busy with buses. Divided villas have shared halls with several front doors and staircases that have been rebuilt more than once.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Questions we get asked in Upper Clapton
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Which postcodes do you cover around Upper Clapton?
Yes. Upper Clapton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E5. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Hackney. Controlled hours that end in the middle of the afternoon make the second half of the day easy and put the whole problem in the first half. That has to cover more than the unload, since the corbels, the flat bar and the fixings all come off the van well before the top does. A bar top left on a pavement is a bar top with a chipped nose. The work comes to you. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, with nothing to visit or collect.
Does the housing in Upper Clapton change how bar tops works?
A deep butler sink and a boiling tap on the same length put two heavy cut-outs within a metre of each other. There is normally room here for a genuine bar rather than a seating overhang, which means a rear counter, a small sink and a run of shelving being drawn as one piece of joinery with the stone reading across all of it. A bar in a small room is drawn for the stools it will take. Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. A bar top is levelled to itself rather than to what it stands on, so the packing goes into the frame and the stools take up whatever the floor is doing. Leaning is a sideways load and framing has to answer for it.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Upper Clapton?
A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. That matters more on a bar than on a run, because a join forced by the way in cannot be allowed to land in the unsupported part of the nose. Steel for the overhang is carried in and fixed before the stone. A short lunchtime window of control exists to keep commuters off the street, and it still catches a trade van standing there for an hour. A trade bar is fitted around opening times, so the window the van has and the window the room has are rarely the same window. What comes off the van first is whatever holds the top up.
Would you call Upper Clapton a bar tops area?
No, not particularly, and it would be easy to say otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop installation. That is the local housing talking rather than anything about the job. It is priced, cut and fitted no differently here than anywhere else we cover. Four kitchens ordered together take one template visit and one delivery, and that is where the saving comes from rather than from a discount on the stone. Where the same detail is repeating across several rooms the support gets standardised once and then cut to length, which is cheaper than drawing it each time. A bar goes in last, so it is measured last. Rooms in a shared house are let individually, so the work has to be done around whoever is still living in the building. Harder use and stronger cleaning products push the answer towards porcelain or sintered stone, because a resin-bound surface is the one that shows what has been left standing on it. What gets leaned on gets specified for leaning.
What am I actually paying for, line by line?
A run that stops in mid-air at the open end needs a finished end rather than a cut one, and that end takes the same edge work as the whole front. A bar laid over that is a second level rather than a wider one, so it wants a spine underneath it and a settled detail where the two heights meet. Where the two levels meet is a detail, not an afterthought. The supply-only figure for material runs £110 to £550 per square metre, and templating, fabrication and fitting are lines of their own.
Is there anything I have to finish before the template in Upper Clapton?
A window board sitting below finished worktop height leaves two choices, drop the top under it or notch the stone around it, and both cost more than a straight run. Where the nose has to be carried past something fixed the support moves rather than the stone, since a corbel landing in the knee space is worse than no corbel at all. Nothing under the nose is allowed to be in the way. Send the bar layout with the rear counter and any sink marked, the seating side and stool count, and the edge profile you want on the front. A landlord with several similar flats usually wants one specification repeated, so the material, the edge detail and the upstand height are recorded and reused rather than rechosen each time. A home bar is discretionary work, so the edge profile, the corbel detail and the radius on the nose are worth settling properly rather than defaulting to whatever is quickest. A bar outlasts whoever specified it.
What is actually on an Upper Clapton worktop quote?
Nothing is payable until the template, and the template measures the room as it stands rather than estimating from a plan. What is quoted is what the drawing says, and the figure does not move unless the drawing does. The edge profile is its own line, so a shaped edge and a square one are two different figures. A cill projecting forward of the plaster line pushes the back edge out, and the units then stand off the wall by that amount for the whole length. Anything that puts a notch in a bar takes material out of the piece at the point people lean on it, so the notch and the support are drawn together or not at all. The back of a bar is seen, so the back is finished.
Do I have to get rid of the old tops myself in Upper Clapton?
The template can be taken with the old top still down, which is why one visit covers both. Disposal means it goes in the van, not into the garden to wait for a collection. The tap and waste have to be disconnected by a plumber before we start and reconnected once the stone is in. Where the nearest legal space is a couple of streets back, the walk with each piece becomes the job, and the crew is sized for walking rather than wheeling. Where the clock is running the frame is levelled and the steel is in before the top ever leaves the tail lift. The van stands for the frame as well as the top.
How much upkeep is a stone worktop?
Granite tells you when the seal wants topping up: water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening it instead. Day to day all three want soap and water; abrasive creams and scouring pads are what dull a polished surface. Quartz carries resin, so a hot pan wants a trivet, while granite and sintered stone will take one without complaint. Ceilings are high enough that an extractor over the island has a long drop, and its position is fixed before the island top is templated. Lengths run past what a single slab gives, so a break is designed in from the start, placed over support and kept clear of every stool position before anything is nested. Blockwork holds a fixing and plasterboard does not.
What do you need from me for the sink and hob cut-outs?
A piece with a bowl and a hob cut into it is the fragile one, and it is handled accordingly. If the sink or hob changes after the template, the drawing changes first and nothing is cut meanwhile. A boiling tap needs a hole of its own and a cupboard below for the tank, so the units change too. Where a run finishes hard against a wall the last few millimetres are scribed, and where it finishes in open floor it is cut square and polished, which is two different jobs on one length. Where the counter runs flush with the working surface instead of standing above it the whole thing becomes one plane, which looks better and doubles the unsupported span. Stools need floor as well as knee room, and both are drawn.
