The back addition is a narrow two-storey outrigger with a single external wall, and the kitchen galley runs the length of it. The galley run down a side-return usually measures longer than a slab will give us, so a join is designed in from the start and nested to land over a cabinet gable rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Settled on the drawing, cut once. Island and run cut from the same block is the expectation here, so reserve the slabs together and lay the veining out before cutting rather than after.

The streets around the village are permit-only and narrow with parking both sides, and the park roads restrict through traffic. Houses have front paths and steps, and many have side access to the rear which is worth using rather than going through the hall. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. An island is a single visible piece with four finished edges and no wall to hide against, so it is the piece the whole kitchen is judged on. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. That is nested before any glass goes on the saw. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. The drawing decides it, not the fitter. The sink and hob need to be on site and the run layout fixed before we start cutting, because moving a hob after the join position is set means recutting the whole piece. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
