Walworth kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
A hundred and forty years of alterations sit under the current kitchen, and the worktop is what has to sit flat on top of all of it. Two to three hours on site, once the units are fitted, fixed and level. Units fitted, fixed and level first.
Small Georgian and early Victorian terraces around the squares where a rear closet-wing kitchen gives an L of about 2.4m by 1.4m, and Victorian artisan tenements where the flats were never designed for a modern kitchen at all, so units are shoehorned in around windows and stacks.
Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. The template plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
What turns up on the job sheets is Georgian square terrace, Victorian tenement block, Victorian terrace and 1930s and 1960s estate. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
The tenement blocks are reached by external stairs and shared landings with a tight 180-degree turn and no lift; Walworth Road is a red route with heavy bus traffic, so loading has to happen on the residential side streets.
Loading exemptions on red routes are narrow, time-limited and heavily camera-enforced, so we plan around them rather than relying on them. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew.

What gets asked for here
This is one of the three jobs that come up most here, behind worktop replacement. It is the same template visit, the same workshop and the same installers either way.
period detached houses and villas
The building, and what it does to the job
The tenement stairs decide the piece sizes - anything over about 2m on edge will not make the turn, so joints get placed to suit the stairwell.

True everywhere, stated once
A template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended. How far those two things diverge is entirely a function of when the house was built.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in Walworth
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you cover Walworth?
Yes. Walworth is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are SE17. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Southwark. Loading exemptions on red routes are narrow, time-limited and heavily camera-enforced, so we plan around them rather than relying on them. A templater circling for a space arrives late into a slot that was already tight, and the drawing is what suffers. The templater needs a proper stop, not a pause. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Does the housing in Walworth change how worktop templating works?
Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. The template plots the bow along the back of the run, which is why a tape reading taken beforehand never matches. No stone is ever cut from a plan. The tenement stairs decide the piece sizes - anything over about 2m on edge will not make the turn, so joints get placed to suit the stairwell.
How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Walworth?
The tenement blocks are reached by external stairs and shared landings with a tight 180-degree turn and no lift; Walworth Road is a red route with heavy bus traffic, so loading has to happen on the residential side streets. A walk-up with winders at every half-landing means the piece is rested and re-gripped on the way, so the crew size goes up before the piece size comes down. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. The template records it along with everything else.
Is worktop templating common in Walworth?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
Why do two Walworth kitchens the same size price differently?
The return piece is the awkward one on a slab: short, full depth, and rarely nesting neatly against the long lengths, so yield rather than area is what moves the material figure. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What has to be finished before you can template?
Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Units fixed and packed level over the sloping floor, walls replastered and dry at their final thickness (tiling and splashbacks go on after the worktop, never before), and the sink, tap and hob physically on site, with a Belfast sink built in and set at its finished height. Mixed ownership means the decision-maker is not always the person who lets us in, so it is worth being clear early about who signs the quote off. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. No stone is cut from a plan.
