West Wickham kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. Units fitted, fixed and level first.
Classic inter-war suburban stock where the standard project is knocking the kitchen into the dining room and extending 3m to the rear, producing a 4m run plus an island around 1.8-2.2m.
Bin drawers, boiling taps and a separate utility door to the garden come up on nearly every specification.
Houses of this period came with generous garages and utility rooms, so a second short run of stone is often part of the same job. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
On these streets the housing is 1930s semi, 1930s detached, 1950s detached and 1960s flats. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here
Second or third on the list around here, after worktop design & quotation. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.
1930s and inter-war semis
Getting stone into the room
Good driveways and dropped kerbs on most roads, though the semis have a shared drive on some streets where you have to co-ordinate with the neighbour before blocking it.
1930s and inter-war semis
The building, and what it does to the job
The repeated 1930s footprint means the island rarely sits square to the original walls once the extension goes on, so the island is set off the new steels, not the old wall line.
The stone carries the scribe because the wall cannot be persuaded, so back edges are cut oversize and eased in rather than dropped straight down. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. That is why the visit takes two or three hours.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in West Wickham
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in West Wickham, or just list it?
Yes. West Wickham is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are BR4. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bromley. Gravel and block paving both look like hard standing and neither takes a loaded trolley, so the run from tail lift to door gets boarded. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop templating in West Wickham?
Houses of this period came with generous garages and utility rooms, so a second short run of stone is often part of the same job. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. No stone is ever cut from a plan. The repeated 1930s footprint means the island rarely sits square to the original walls once the extension goes on, so the island is set off the new steels, not the old wall line.
Is access a problem in West Wickham?
Good driveways and dropped kerbs on most roads, though the semis have a shared drive on some streets where you have to co-ordinate with the neighbour before blocking it. Where the van stands level with the front of the house a piece gets handled twice instead of five times, and stone breaks on handling rather than on the road. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. That is part of what the visit is for.
Is worktop templating common in West Wickham?
It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop design & quotation. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
What decides the price of a worktop in West Wickham?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. Real angles, not plan angles. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Walls that bow along their length are the normal condition rather than the exception, and a straight-cut back edge will show a shadow gap at one end and touch at the other. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. Where someone is living in the house through the work, the strip-out and the fit are planned so the kitchen is out of use for a day and not a week. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
