Whetstone kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian cottage on the High Road1930s semi1960s-2000s flat block

Permitted working hours, a porter and a booked lift set a hard finish time on the day whatever stage the fit has reached. Two kitchens of the same floor area price very differently for exactly these reasons, and the quote should show you which one you have. Itemised, and nothing payable until we template.

Mixed stock, so the work splits between interwar semis taking modest rear extensions with a 3.6m run and a growing number of retirement and purpose-built flats where the kitchen is a compact galley being upgraded without moving anything.

Older buyers ask for lower-maintenance surfaces and undermounted sinks rather than islands. Retirement blocks often have restricted working hours and no drilling before nine, so a wet-cut on site is usually not an option and pieces must arrive finished.

These blocks were built with a lift from new, which will usually take a worktop and almost never takes a full-length island piece. If the diagonal of the car will not take a full-length piece, the worktop gets designed around the lift rather than around the room, which means extra joins, worse nesting on the slab and sometimes a second slab bought to produce the same kitchen in more pieces. You see it before you commit to anything.

What we are usually templating in is Victorian cottage on the High Road, 1930s semi and 1960s-2000s flat block. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Worktop design and quotation, in short

  • Material is £110–£550/m² supply. That is the slab only.
  • Templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted as their own lines.
  • No installed price per square metre is published, because it is not a real number.
  • Nothing is payable until we template.

Covered on our north London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Getting stone into the room

The High Road is a red route with almost no stopping, so vans work from side streets; the flat blocks have parking courts and lifts, but many of the older ones have lifts too small for a full-length slab.

What gets asked for here

Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. Everything is itemised: material, template, fabrication, fitting, each cut-out and each metre of upstand. Material is the slab only, and it says so.

Honestly, this is not what we do most on this patch. Worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating come up more often. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work, and nothing about how it is quoted, cut or fitted changes because of it.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop design & quotation in Whetstone

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Whetstone?

Yes. Whetstone is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are N20. It is worked on our north London run, along with the rest of Barnet. A red route means no stopping, and no stopping means exactly that, so the stone comes in from a side street or from a bay behind the property. It sits in the fitting line as time on site rather than as anything to do with the stone. You are told before you commit to a date. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Whetstone change how worktop design & quotation works?

The original kitchen was a small service room, so what is there now is a knock-through and the junction between the two floors is rarely level. The lift car is the single biggest price driver here. That is what the itemised lines are for. Retirement blocks often have restricted working hours and no drilling before nine, so a wet-cut on site is usually not an option and pieces must arrive finished.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Whetstone?

The High Road is a red route with almost no stopping, so vans work from side streets; the flat blocks have parking courts and lifts, but many of the older ones have lifts too small for a full-length slab. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. An access-driven join is priced like any other join, and people are always surprised to see one on a dead straight run. It appears as its own line rather than buried in a rate.

Is Whetstone really a worktop design & quotation area?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop installation and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. That changes what the quote should be compared against, because the shape of the job is not the same as a single family kitchen. Nothing payable until we template. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. Comparing quotes only works when they itemise the same things, and this is where the differences usually hide. Material is the slab only, and it says so.

Why do two Whetstone kitchens the same size price differently?

Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. Each run is priced on its own line against the supply rate, with the join count and the reason for each join stated. Shape first, area second. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

A notch around a boxed stack is machined with a radius at the internal corner, because a square inside corner there is exactly where a top will crack. Send photographs of every corner of the room and it gets priced properly first time. Better on the quote than in a variation. Measure the internal lift car, width, depth and height, and photograph the stair turn and landing doors, then send those with the run lengths. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. Material is quoted as a supply range and the labour lines separately, because an installed rate per square metre is not a real number. Written to be read by whoever is paying.
