Yiewsley kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

Victorian terraceEdwardian terrace1960s flatcanalside new-build apartment

Nothing in a house of this age is square, and the kitchen is usually the part that has been altered most often. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. The route is walked before the first lift.

Galley layouts, single runs of 2.4m to 3m, and no island in either case.

The terraces have no side access whatsoever, so every slab goes through the front room and the hallway door turn is what limits the piece length. Small terrace kitchens in the older streets and compact apartment kitchens in the newer canalside blocks. The High Street is a busy through route and the level crossing at West Drayton backs traffic up. The new blocks have controlled underground parking and lift booking.

A two-up two-down has a kitchen that was never designed to be one, so the run is short, the ceiling is low and every millimetre of depth gets argued over. The day is planned backwards from the hall, and the scribing takes longer than the carry. That is the shape of the day.

What we are usually templating in is Victorian terrace, Edwardian terrace, 1960s flat and canalside new-build apartment. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our west London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The shape of the run

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. The join is the last thing finished.

What gets asked for here

Second or third on the list around here, after worktop replacement. Same visit, same bench, same crew, same lead time.

The building, and what it does to the job

The hallway turn and the door width, which cap the longest single piece we can physically get to the kitchen regardless of what the run measures.

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Access

Getting stone into a Yiewsley kitchen

The High Street is a busy through route and the level crossing at West Drayton backs traffic up. The new blocks have controlled underground parking and lift booking.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

3–7 working days

From template to fitted, working days from template. The same on this patch as every other.

Access told straight

If the route forces an extra join, you hear that at quote stage, not on the day.

Questions

Worktop installation in Yiewsley

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Yiewsley, or just list it?

Yes. Yiewsley is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are UB7. It is worked on our west London run, along with the rest of Hillingdon. Unrestricted kerbside is straightforward as long as the space in front of the property is actually clear when the van arrives. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop installation in Yiewsley?

Floors are suspended timber over a shallow void and have moved, so the units are packed and levelled before anything is set on them. The day is planned backwards from the hall. That is the shape of the day. The terraces have no side access whatsoever, so every slab goes through the front room and the hallway door turn is what limits the piece length.

Is access a problem in Yiewsley?

The High Street is a busy through route and the level crossing at West Drayton backs traffic up. The new blocks have controlled underground parking and lift booking. A car that takes 2.4m on the diagonal will not take a three-metre worktop however it is stood, and there is no trimming it on the landing. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. None of it is worked out on the doorstep.

Is worktop installation common in Yiewsley?

It is one of the three we do most here, behind worktop replacement. Same template visit, same workshop, same installers either way. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave. Handover-spec kitchens are square, plumb and predictable, which means the join count is honest and driven by run length rather than by the building. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.

What decides the price of a worktop in Yiewsley?

The catch with a galley is that both runs are seen end-on from the doorway, so any difference in overhang between the two reads immediately. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Where a corner is a couple of degrees off, a mitre cut to a theoretical ninety degrees opens on the wall side and there is no closing it afterwards. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Eased in, never forced. Clear the full hall and stairs route of furniture, bikes, coats and stair-gates, and keep the front door propped and unobstructed for the carry. The same building type can arrive as a careful one-off kitchen or as a fast turnaround, and the honest answer is that they are priced differently. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. Protection goes down first.
