Blackfen kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Two runs and a return into a rear extension is the pattern, and the return is the piece that never nests neatly on a slab. Almost everything that makes a fitting day hard is a property of the building rather than of the stone. One visit, our own installers.
The volume of work is knock-throughs and new 3.5m runs, with rear extensions on the longer gardens toward the park.
Textbook 1930s suburbia: bay-fronted semis with a rear kitchen, larder and separate dining room.
The chimney breast in the corner has usually been left in place, so the run gains a return and two scribed ends. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
The mix here is 1930s semi, interwar parade flats and postwar infill. Which of those you have decides most of what follows.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our south east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
1930s and inter-war semis
What gets asked for here
Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional.
This is the job the local stock asks for first, ahead of worktop replacement and worktop design & quotation.
1930s and inter-war semis
The building, and what it does to the job
The original larder recess is usually where the tall units end up, plan the return around it rather than losing 400mm of run.
The side gate width and any step or drain cover in the alley, which decide whether we can carry long pieces flat down the side instead of through the front.

Getting stone into the room
Wide roads with verges, drives and dropped kerbs almost everywhere; the shopping parade is the only stretch with waiting restrictions.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Blackfen
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Blackfen, or just list it?
Yes. Blackfen is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are DA15. It is worked on our south east London run, along with the rest of Bexley. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. We would rather ask than guess. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop installation in Blackfen?
These kitchens have been retiled at least twice, and stripping the tiles takes the bottom band of plaster with them because the old laminate ran underneath rather than up to them. Access is usually the easy part here, as most of these have a side gate and a back door straight into the kitchen, so we carry down the side alley rather than through the house and keep the mess outside. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. The original larder recess is usually where the tall units end up, plan the return around it rather than losing 400mm of run.
Is access a problem in Blackfen?
Wide roads with verges, drives and dropped kerbs almost everywhere; the shopping parade is the only stretch with waiting restrictions. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.
Is Blackfen mostly worktop installation work for you?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop replacement and worktop design & quotation. Rear and side-return extensions are where the islands appear, and an island is the piece that decides whether one slab does the kitchen or two. Where the window is fixed there is no second day to fall back on, so the prep list matters more than usual. The prep list is not optional. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. Sealed before we leave.
What decides the price of a worktop in Blackfen?
Galley runs are usually short enough to come out of a single slab, so the material band you choose does more to the total than the room shape does. On the day that means dry-laying the whole layout first and only then pulling and bonding the joins. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
The returns into a breast recess are the tightest scribes in the room, and they are eased in rather than forced. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Unlock and clear the side gate and back door, and move bins, planters and washing lines out of the alley run. The householder is normally on site at template, and that is the right time to settle sink position, tap centres and overhang rather than agree them by email. The fitting day is arranged with whoever can actually give us access for the whole slot. One visit, our own installers.
