Blackfriars kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Plasterboard partitions mean light scribes and clean joins, and the fabrication effort moves to the visible faces instead. The template records what the building actually did, not what the plan intended, and the gap between those two is what this visit is for. The room as it is, to the millimetre.
Older commercial conversions here have thick masonry cross-walls, meaning the kitchen sits in a defined bay and long single pieces are actually easier than in a modern open plan. Riverside flats put the living space against the glazing and the kitchen against the core, so the run is 3-3.5m with a peninsula facing the river and one polished exposed end on show. Queen Victoria Street and the Embankment approaches are red route and bus-heavy with no stopping, so unloading is into a building's own basement bay or a booked side-street window, not the main road. Most buildings run a security desk with contractor sign-in, and the goods lift needs booking a few days ahead.
A riverside block is a managed building with a booked goods lift, a loading bay and a concierge, and all three have to line up on the same day. The room is square and the plasterboard is not, so the internal corner is recorded as it is rather than as ninety degrees. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
What we are usually templating in is riverside apartment block, 1990s-2000s conversion of commercial building, modern mixed-use tower and small period flat above offices. Each of those behaves differently once the old top comes off.
True everywhere
Worktop templating, in short
- Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
- Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
- Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
- A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.
Covered on our the City run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The shape of the run
Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. Real angles, not plan angles.

What gets asked for here
This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop installation, worktop fabrication and worktop replacement is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

The building, and what it does to the job
Riverside peninsulas are seen from three sides, so pay for the extra polished edge and end profile rather than leaving a sawn edge facing the room.

Getting stone into a Blackfriars kitchen
Queen Victoria Street and the Embankment approaches are red route and bus-heavy with no stopping, so unloading is into a building's own basement bay or a booked side-street window, not the main road. Most buildings run a security desk with contractor sign-in, and the goods lift needs booking a few days ahead.
Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop templating in Blackfriars
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Do you actually work in Blackfriars, or just list it?
Yes. Blackfriars is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are EC4V, EC4Y. It is worked on our the City run, along with the rest of the Square Mile. The realistic answer on a main road is an early slot, a spotter on the van and pieces staged in one movement rather than several trips. The templating visit needs somewhere to stop for two or three hours, which is a different problem from unloading for twenty minutes. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
What is different about worktop templating in Blackfriars?
Open-plan living makes the kitchen furniture rather than utility, so the island and the run behind it are nested off the same area of slab. New-build rooms are genuinely square, but they are dot-and-dab plasterboard, and the taped internal angle is where it goes wrong - the board bellies at the corner and the run picks up a few millimetres over the last 300mm. Two to three hours, once the units are in. Riverside peninsulas are seen from three sides, so pay for the extra polished edge and end profile rather than leaving a sawn edge facing the room.
Is access a problem in Blackfriars?
Queen Victoria Street and the Embankment approaches are red route and bus-heavy with no stopping, so unloading is into a building's own basement bay or a booked side-street window, not the main road. Most buildings run a security desk with contractor sign-in, and the goods lift needs booking a few days ahead. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. A template taken without walking the route produces a drawing that cuts beautifully and will not go in. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.
Is Blackfriars really a worktop templating area?
Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop fabrication and worktop replacement. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is inconvenient exactly when a programme is tight. The room as it is, not as it was drawn.
What decides the price of a worktop in Blackfriars?
Because a peninsula is seen from both sides, the underside of any overhang gets the same edge treatment as the top, which is easy to leave out of a spec. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. The drawing leaves site complete. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What do I need to sort out first?
Where a partition has been built off the floor screed rather than off the slab, it moves, and a mitre bonded across that corner is the first thing to open. It is recorded on the drawing with the run dimensions so the workshop is not guessing. That is why the visit takes two or three hours. Boards taped or skimmed and finished, units fixed back to the wall and levelled off, and the appliances on site - the wall must be at its final thickness on template day, so no tiler or splashback fitter gets ahead of the worktop. Where ownership is split across a building, the common parts belong to someone else and the carry route is negotiated rather than assumed. The template happens when the units are in, fixed and level, whoever is fitting them. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
