Blackhorse Lane kitchens
What the kitchens here are actually like
Services coming up through a floor slab mean the island cannot move to suit the stone, so the stone is cut to suit the island. The fitting day is planned backwards from all of it, before the first piece comes off the van. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.
New blocks along the corridor have open-plan kitchens with a 2.8m to 3.2m run of handleless units and an integrated appliance tower, often with a small island in the larger flats. Converted warehouse and studio units have taller ceilings and free-standing kitchen blocks with exposed sides.
The new blocks take a full-length single piece up a decent goods lift, which is worth designing for rather than defaulting to a jointed run. The main road is a bus and cycle corridor with limited stopping, so deliveries route into the developments' service yards, which need booking with the building manager. Newer blocks have proper goods lifts, but the older industrial units are reached through shared yards with roller doors and no lift at all.
Poured screed over steel decking can fall away across a long run, so level is checked across the whole room before anything is packed. These read as easy from the outside and rarely are. The slow parts are slow for a reason.
What we are usually templating in is former industrial and warehouse conversion, 2016 onwards apartment tower and interwar terrace. The differences between them show up at template, not at enquiry.
True everywhere
Worktop installation, in short
- One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
- Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
- We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
- Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.
Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

Getting stone into the room
Where the bay sits some distance from the core, the carry across the car park is the longest leg of the day and gets boarded and lit. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. The day is built around that window.

What gets asked for here
The research on this patch puts this at the top of the list, above worktop replacement and worktop fabrication.
warehouse and wharf conversions
The building, and what it does to the job
The flat's own doorway and any internal level change, which are usually tighter than the building's goods lift and easy to overlook.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions
Worktop installation in Blackhorse Lane
If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.
Is Blackhorse Lane on your patch?
Yes. Blackhorse Lane is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are E17. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Waltham Forest. A dedicated loading bay or service yard is the easiest arrangement in a managed building, provided the slot is booked and someone has the key to the shutter. The fitting slot is set around it, which is why we ask about it when the date is booked and not before we leave the yard. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.
Why would worktop installation in Blackhorse Lane be any different from anywhere else?
Poured screed over steel decking can fall away across a long run, so level is checked across the whole room before anything is packed. The goods lift is often industrial and generous, but the flat entrance and any internal turn into a mezzanine or split level can be tighter than anything in the building, so we walk the full route with a tape before unloading. Walked, measured, protected, then lifted. The new blocks take a full-length single piece up a decent goods lift, which is worth designing for rather than defaulting to a jointed run.
How would you get a worktop into a property in Blackhorse Lane?
The main road is a bus and cycle corridor with limited stopping, so deliveries route into the developments' service yards, which need booking with the building manager. Newer blocks have proper goods lifts, but the older industrial units are reached through shared yards with roller doors and no lift at all. Where the lift will not take the longest run we design a join in rather than gamble, because a piece that will not go up has to go back on the van. Finding it out on the morning costs the whole slot, because there is no second route to fall back on. That is what the morning is planned around.
Is worktop installation the job you do most in Blackhorse Lane?
Yes. On the research for this patch it is the first of the three jobs listed, ahead of worktop replacement and worktop fabrication. The junction between the original room and the extension is the point to watch, because the two floors rarely sit at the same height. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. One visit, done properly. Extension kitchens are usually specified long before they are buildable, so the run lengths on the drawing and the run lengths in the room are different numbers. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.
What moves the number on a quote around here?
Seating overhangs past roughly 300mm will not carry on the carcass alone, so flat steel bar or a plywood substrate has to be built into the units first. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. Dry-lay first, always. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.
What needs to be ready before you come to Blackhorse Lane?
A deep scribe comes out of the nest, so how far the stone has to be relieved changes which part of the slab the piece is cut from. Rushing that is what leaves a gap you look at every morning for fifteen years. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Confirm loading bay access and lift booking with the building's management, and clear any furniture from the mezzanine stairs or split-level approach. Where the owner is not local, the decisions happen remotely, so photographs and a clear itemised drawing carry more weight than a showroom visit ever would. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
