Underground loading has a height restriction, and a van with an A-frame on it is taller than the driver remembers. Where unloading has to happen in one go, the load order is planned so nothing has to come off twice. The load plan follows from it. Original brickwork is uneven by ten millimetres or more across a bay, so the back edge is scribed to the actual face rather than to a line. Access is by goods lift or a shared stair with a hard turn onto the landing, and both cap the piece length, so the nesting is done to the measured car or turn rather than to the slab. The bench proves it before the van moves. The new blocks take a full-length single piece up a decent goods lift, which is worth designing for rather than defaulting to a jointed run.

The main road is a bus and cycle corridor with limited stopping, so deliveries route into the developments' service yards, which need booking with the building manager. If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. Pieces are dry-assembled on the bench before dispatch so the corners are known to close before they leave the workshop. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

An intruding steel column, a brick pier or a downstand breaks a run that would otherwise have been one clean piece. Cut it square where it should be radiused and the piece will fail on the lift, not in the kitchen. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The island layout, including whether the ends are mitred down to the floor, needs settling before cutting, since mitred ends are cut in sequence with the top and dry-assembled as one unit. A let property is specified for durability and for a fixed window, and both of those are legitimate reasons to choose differently. The workshop works from the approved drawing, so whoever signs it off is signing off the join positions too. The approved drawing is the instruction.
