Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Pieces are loaded in reverse fitting order so the first thing off the van is the first thing that goes down. That is the last thing settled before dispatch. A detached house of this age has a drive, a side path and a back door, so access is rarely the constraint and the design can follow the room. Where a full length can come down the side and in at the back, the nest follows the slab instead of the building. Every join over a gable, clear of every cut-out. Two sinks and two hobs in one run leaves very little solid material between cut-outs, so the piece needs rodding or a repositioned joint to survive transport.

Wide 1930s roads with driveways and clear side access on most houses, though a lot of side alleys have been filled by side extensions. Around the station and the shopping centre, loading is restricted and multi-storey height barriers rule out taller vans. A side gate and a back door mean the stone never goes through the house at all, which keeps the dust and most of the risk outside. Two parallel runs with a walkway between them is the most efficient shape there is on a slab, because both pieces nest as straight lengths with almost no waste. A join that lands in the wrong place cannot be moved once the cut-outs are machined, so it is settled on the drawing. The bench proves it before the van does. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. The template drawing carries the real geometry through to the saw, and the piece is machined to it rather than trimmed to it later. Radiused, polished, and clear of the joins. The peninsula end detail needs deciding up front - square edge, mitred apron down the end, or a full waterfall - because a waterfall end has to be cut in sequence off the same part of the slab as the top. Owner-occupied kitchens are usually being done once, which is why the edge profile, the vein direction and where a join falls are worth the conversation. Changing an appliance after the nest is set means recutting the piece, not adjusting it. Changes cost a piece, not a tweak.
