Emerson Park kitchens

The buildings and streets around Emerson Park

inter-war detachedpost-war detachedmodern rebuilt houselarge plot self-build

There is a reason we ask about the building before we talk about stone, and reception counter work in Emerson Park is a good illustration of it. Very large detached houses on wide plots, a good proportion of them demolished and rebuilt, so kitchens are designed from scratch as double-height family spaces with two islands or an island plus a full prep pantry behind. Slab-matched splashbacks, waterfall ends, integrated drainer grooves and matching utility and bar tops all come as one package here. Neither case is harder than the other for us. Both start with somebody standing in the kitchen with a tape.

Ceilings are high enough that the wall units sit low against them, which leaves a tall band of wall above the worktop doing nothing. Two working surfaces at two heights, a return between them and clear knee space under the lower one: that is the shape almost every counter ends up being, whatever the front elevation promised. The transaction shelf carries the detail the upper counter hides.

The kitchen is a rear service room with a scullery and a larder off it, and both have usually survived as separate spaces. Large houses in these streets get converted into clinics, nurseries, small offices and members' rooms, and the reception ends up in a hall that was never meant to hold a desk. The lobby was finished by somebody else, and the counter joins it.

What the job sheets keep listing is inter-war detached, post-war detached, modern rebuilt house and large plot self-build. That mix is why two jobs on the same road can run completely differently.

True everywhere

Reception counters and desks, in short

  • A counter on a joiner's carcass is templated after the carcass is in, not from the drawing.
  • The lower transaction shelf needs clear knee space beneath it, which decides where a leg or a gable can go.
  • Long runs are joined over a support, and the join is placed where the eye does not follow the counter.
  • Cable and card-reader apertures are cut in the workshop, not on site.

The place

Why Emerson Park is its own job

What we want to establish about your kitchen in Emerson Park is how we get to it and what we will be fixing against. In-and-out gravel drives, gated entrances and plenty of standing room on the plot; the practical limits are gate head height and soft ground rather than parking. These are multi-slab jobs where the veining has to run through island, splashback and pantry, so we dry-lay and mark the sequence in the workshop before a single cut. Better to know it at the design visit than to find out with a slab standing on the pavement.

The work

What reception counters involves

Reception counter work covers the stone only: the upper counter, the transaction shelf, the return between them and any upstand behind, all made to a carcass a joiner has already built and fixed. The templater attends once the carcass is in and fixed, and records what the joiner actually built rather than what the elevation showed. You get openings machined for the equipment you actually have, not holes cut through a finished top with a diamond bit in a busy lobby.

This is commercial fit-out work cut on the same saw as a kitchen, with an entirely different set of questions attached to it. The whole counter is dry-assembled on the bench, apertures and all, before anything is wrapped for the van. A clinic or nursery in a converted house wants a counter that reads as furniture, which puts the edge profile and the returns under proper scrutiny. The lobby opens as normal the following morning.

The money

What it costs in Emerson Park

The fitting line answers to the lobby and to the hours we are allowed in it, which is why a counter fitted at night costs more than the same counter fitted in the day. The island is normally the largest single piece in the kitchen, which makes it the piece that sets the carry and sometimes the price. The catalogue starts at £110 per square metre at the plainest end and reaches £550 at the top, supply only, with the same fabrication work sitting behind either choice. The knee recess costs support, and the support is shown.

What Emerson Park asks for

A trade counter or a bar does not come out of the local housing stock, so there is no ranking to give you. The housing itself asks for worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop templating. The work is quoted the same way regardless.

period detached houses and villas

The carry, and what it rules out

A dropped kerb wide enough for a car is not always wide enough for a long-wheelbase van, and the width of the crossing decides the rest. A reception fit is often booked outside opening hours precisely because that is when the kerb in front of the building is free. The van stays put while the carcass is being scribed to.

Emerson Park in the housing figures

Locally owner-occupation runs well above the London average. Runs are long enough that the joins have to be planned rather than placed. A counter left behind at lease end is specified with the next occupier in mind. Serving height comes off the accessibility standard every time.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Questions we get asked in Emerson Park

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do your own fitters come out to Emerson Park?

Yes. Emerson Park is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM11. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Havering. Where a car has to come off the drive first, it is worth knowing whose car it is and whether the keys are in the house on the morning. A commercial frontage rarely has anywhere to stop, so the unload is timed rather than assumed and the counter pieces come off first. A red route puts a clock on a counter that will not be rushed. Everything that involves you happens in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Is there anything about Emerson Park buildings that catches reception counters out?

Windows are low and wide with deep timber cills and leaded lights, so a run under one meets joinery rather than plaster. What is wanted there is a counter reading as furniture rather than as a shop fitting, which puts the edge profile, the returns and the finish on the back of the counter under real scrutiny. A parade unit is entered up a step nobody thought to measure. Where the sill lands inside the height an upstand would occupy there is no upstand, and the stone either dies into the reveal or stops short of it. A counter is worse off than a kitchen here, because it usually stands clear of the wall and has nothing behind it to hide a gap. Two levels means two datums, and they are reconciled on paper.

What do you check about the route into an Emerson Park property?

Bollards, planters and a one-way service road can turn what looks like a ten-metre carry into a fifty-metre one. A counter top is one long piece with no run of cabinets to break it, so the route decides the join count before the sightlines get a vote. Nothing is carried through a reception still taking visitors. A gate post set narrower than the opening looks generous from the road and stops a wide piece a metre in. Loading bays belonging to the building are booked by whoever holds the lease, and that is seldom whoever ordered the counter. Where the bay is booked by the hour, pieces come off in fitting order.

Does Emerson Park actually ask for reception counters?

Not really, and there is no sense dressing it up. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop design & quotation, worktop fabrication and worktop templating. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It gets quoted, cut and fitted exactly as it would anywhere else on the patch. An open-plan extension puts the worktop in the middle of the living space, so it is looked at from the sofa as well as worked on. Where an operator is fitting out several receptions, the counters come off one slab run so the desks read as a set rather than as neighbours. What the operator needs at the shelf outranks the elevation. Extension budgets are usually well spent by the time the worktop is ordered, which is where the choice between quartz and a thinner sintered stone actually gets made. A fit-out programme puts the counter last, behind the joiner and the electrician, which is exactly when the least time is left to template it. The knee recess is not a variable between sites.

Why do two Emerson Park kitchens the same size price differently?

Where an overhang is too deep for steel on its own the choice is a leg at the end or a bracket underneath, and a bracket that lands where a knee goes is worse than no bracket at all. A counter has the same argument in miniature: a straight run nests kindly on a slab, and every return costs yield. The longest piece is decided before the shape is finalised. Material sits between £110 and £550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted line by line.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Casement handles and stays swing down into the space above the worktop, so the clearance that counts is the one measured with the window open. What a counter is scribed to is the joiner's carcass rather than the plaster, which is why it is templated after the carcass is fixed and never before. The public face is the face that has to be right. Confirm the edge profile and which faces receive it, and tell us whether a screen, hatch or gate forms part of the counter before the carcass is built. Where two people share the decision it helps to know early which of them is settling the edge profile and which is settling the budget, because it is rarely the same person for both. The same split runs through commercial property: a landlord fitting out a shell and a tenant fitting out their own reception want different things from one counter. What is left behind at lease end is a specification question.

Is taking the old top off part of the job?

Old tops are screwed or glued from underneath, so the drawer boxes come out before the worktop does. Take the old tops off yourself if you would rather, and the quote simply carries one line fewer. On a replacement the old top comes off in the morning and the new stone is down and sealed the same day. Overhanging branches clear the roof of a car and catch the roof of a van, so the drive is looked at from the driver seat rather than from the doorstep. The upper counter is the longest piece on the van, so the tail lift needs the full swing radius clear on the pavement. The transaction shelf can wait on the van; the counter cannot.

What maintenance does a worktop need in an Emerson Park kitchen?

Marble is the one people underestimate. It is porous, like granite, and wants sealing. The bead where the sink and hob meet the stone is siliconed rather than sealed, and wants watching. Quartz and sintered stone never need sealing: quartz is non-porous and sintered stone has effectively zero porosity. Internal walls are lath and plaster on studs with heavy framing behind, so a fixing finds either nothing at all or something very solid. Large houses in these streets are converted into clinics, nurseries and small offices, and the reception ends up in a hall that was never meant to hold a desk. Where the hall is tall, the light finds every seam in the counter.

What is the order of events on an Emerson Park kitchen?

The fitting itself is one visit: a plain run is a morning, an island with splashbacks takes most of the day. Upstands and splashbacks are templated after the worktop is down and settled, so they are a separate visit. Templating and fitting are two visits, not one, and the gap between them is when the stone is actually cut. Big rooms hide their falls, and the difference from one corner of a five metre floor to the other is measured in tens of millimetres. A reception counter answers to the building it stands in more than to the drawing, because it is fabricated to a carcass somebody else has already built and fixed. What the public leans on is the part specified hardest.

What if a worktop will not physically fit through the building?

Splitting a run costs a join, and that is the price of getting stone into the room at all. Where there is a lift, whether it can be booked out and padded matters as much as its size. A join added to get stone into the room is a different thing from a join added because the slab ran out, and the quote says which is which. The barrier, the entry code and the estate rules decide when a van can get near the door, and none of that is negotiable on the day. The lower transaction shelf is short and easily handled; it is the upper counter that has to be walked in on edge and turned at every corner. The way in is walked with the joiner as well as with a tape.
