Worktop templating in Emerson Park

Off-street parking means the van stays put all day, so tools, packers and the offcut we would rather have than not are all within reach. Original joinery is deep and stands proud of the plaster, so the run is plotted to the units rather than to the wall behind them. These are multi-slab jobs where the veining has to run through island, splashback and pantry, so we dry-lay and mark the sequence in the workshop before a single cut.

In-and-out gravel drives, gated entrances and plenty of standing room on the plot; the practical limits are gate head height and soft ground rather than parking. Where the parking court sits behind the block the carry crosses open ground and gets boarded, because loaded trolleys and block paving do not agree. The templater measures that route on the same visit, so the drawing leaves site already knowing the maximum piece. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

A new extension slab is not automatically level, and that wants checking before templating rather than after the stone is cut. If the island is a few hundred millimetres longer than the usable length of a slab, a second slab gets bought to gain that overhang, and the whole slab is paid for rather than the part used. The template records every angle in that shape as it actually is rather than as the plan drew it. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

Sill height gets settled with the template on site, because it is one of the few dimensions nobody has measured before we arrive. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Measured at worktop height, nowhere else. All runs and the island carcass fixed down and levelled to one datum, with the sink, tap and hob on site - an island cannot be templated while it is still loose or sitting on packers. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. The templater needs the sink, tap and hob on site, and a Belfast sink installed at its final height. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
