Hacton kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1930s semipost-war semi1960s-1970s detachedmodern infill

Solid brick with a sand and cement render is firm to work against and reliably out of plumb across the length of a run. No stone is ever cut from a plan, which is why the visit happens after the units are in and not before. The room as it is, to the millimetre.

A fair number of bungalows and dormer conversions here too, which means single-storey plans and kitchens with two external walls and more window than wall.

Bungalow kitchens here run short of wall because of the window positions, so we plan the run around the glazing rather than trying to force a standard layout. Quieter housing between Hornchurch and Upminster with a good proportion of post-war detached and larger semis, where kitchens tend to be squarer than the terraced stock and take a genuine U-shape without extending.

Everything on one level means no stairs, no landings and no turns, which is about the easiest carry there is in domestic work. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. No stone is ever cut from a plan.

The mix here is 1930s semi, post-war semi, 1960s-1970s detached and modern infill. They are not interchangeable, and a worktop finds the differences quickly.

True everywhere

Worktop templating, in short

  • Two to three hours on site for a typical kitchen.
  • Units must be fitted, fixed and level first. No stone is ever cut from a plan.
  • Sink, tap and hob must be physically on site, not just ordered.
  • A Belfast or butler sink must be installed and at its final height.

Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

What gets asked for here

The research on this patch does not put this among the three commonest jobs. Worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop replacement do. That changes how often we are here, not how the work is done.

1930s and inter-war semis

Getting stone into the room

Wide verged roads with drives and garages, easy standing for the van, and level ground floors in the bungalows which makes the carry simple.

The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Questions

Worktop templating in Hacton

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you actually work in Hacton, or just list it?

Yes. Hacton is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are RM12. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Havering. A front drive is the best thing that can happen to a fitting day, because the tail lift comes down within a few metres of the door and nothing is on a clock. It is noted on the job sheet at template so the fitting crew inherit the answer rather than rediscovering it. It goes on the job sheet for the fitting crew. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

What is different about worktop templating in Hacton?

Bungalow kitchens are frequently extended into the rear or opened into the roof space, so the room is part original and part new build. The typical 1930s kitchen sits at the back with a low window over the sink run, so the template records the exact sill height above the units to settle whether an upstand fits or the stone has to die into a window board. Recorded as it is, not as it was drawn. Bungalow kitchens here run short of wall because of the window positions, so we plan the run around the glazing rather than trying to force a standard layout.

Is access a problem in Hacton?

Wide verged roads with drives and garages, easy standing for the van, and level ground floors in the bungalows which makes the carry simple. The van gets close to the door and the stone comes off the tail lift onto a trolley, which is about the shortest carry we ever get. Door widths, turn diagonals and any change of level are recorded on the drawing alongside the run dimensions. It goes on the drawing with the run dimensions.

Do you get much worktop templating work in Hacton?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop installation, worktop design & quotation and worktop replacement. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Conversions put kitchens where the services could be made to reach rather than where they belong, so runs are short and interrupted. Two to three hours on site, with the sink, tap and hob physically present. Units fitted, fixed and level first. In a converted house the flat entrance and the internal doorway are usually tighter than the communal stairs, and that is easy to overlook. The template visit is booked once the units are genuinely in, not when they are nearly in. Appliances on site, not on order.

What decides the price of a worktop in Hacton?

Three runs means two internal corners, and each corner is a decision about mitre or butt joint before anything is nested. Join positions and vein direction are marked on the template drawing before it leaves site. One datum for the whole room. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What do I need to sort out first?

Alcove pieces get cut oversize on both scribe edges, with the true wall angles carried on the template drawing rather than assumed. The template plots it as it is, at the exact height the worktop will sit, and the drawing carries that through. Plotted, not estimated. All base units in, including anything standing on the later extension slab, walls skimmed to final thickness, and the sink, tap and hob delivered so cut-outs and tap centres are set from the actual items. An owner living in the house makes the decisions and lives with them, so the specification tends to go towards the material rather than towards the lowest total. A template booked hopefully around another trade is the commonest cause of a wasted visit. Fitted, fixed and level, then we come.
