Gascoigne kitchens

What the kitchens here are actually like

1960s tower block1960s low-rise flat2010s-2020s regeneration housing

There is nearly always a boxed soil stack or a service riser in a corner of the run, and it is rarely mentioned at enquiry. Protection down, dry-lay, scribe, then bond: the order matters more in a difficult room than an easy one. Sink and hob seated and sealed before we go.

A large regeneration area where older system-built blocks are being replaced by new flats and maisonettes, so the work splits between compact original flat kitchens getting a hard-wearing replacement top and newer units where owners upgrade the developer's finish. Kitchens are small and linear, one wall, sometimes with a short return, and no island anywhere.

Fire doors and 90-degree landings are the real limit on flat jobs here, so lengths are cut to what will physically turn on the landing.

Kitchens are compact and standardised, which makes the fixed template, fabrication and fitting lines a larger share of the total than the stone. The carry is the constraint. That is the shape of the day.

The buildings themselves are mostly 1960s tower block, 1960s low-rise flat and 2010s-2020s regeneration housing. A quote that ignores which one you have is guessing.

True everywhere

Worktop installation, in short

  • One visit. A straightforward run is a morning; an island and splashbacks take most of the day.
  • Every piece is carried in by hand, and stone does not bend.
  • We seat and seal the sink and hob. We do not connect water, waste, gas or electrics.
  • Floors and units are protected before anything comes through the door.

Covered on our east London run. Fitted 3–7 working days from template.

The building, and what it does to the job

The stairwell half-landing turn, which is usually the tightest point on the whole route and dictates the maximum piece length.

Getting stone into the room

Flats above ground level throughout, so it is lifts, communal stairs, narrow landings and fire doors, with delivery times often restricted by the managing agent.

Communal stairs get boarded and the handrail padded, and we walk the route with a tape before the first piece leaves the van. We walk the route with a tape and protect it end to end before the first piece is lifted. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

What gets asked for here

This is not the local speciality and there is no point saying otherwise: worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands is what the housing here actually asks for. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way regardless.

True everywhere, stated once

Installation is the day the templating either pays off or does not. Almost everything that makes it hard is a property of the building rather than the stone.

Tell us what the approach looks like when you book the template and it gets built into the day rather than discovered on it. Where the route is genuinely tight, it changes how the pieces are cut, which is a fabrication decision rather than a delivery one.

Questions

Worktop installation in Gascoigne

If yours is not here, ring and ask. You get a straight answer rather than a call-back from a salesperson.

Do you cover Gascoigne?

Yes. Gascoigne is on the patch, and the postcodes we work here are IG11. It is worked on our east London run, along with the rest of Barking and Dagenham. Bay bookings are usually an hour or two, which is fine for unloading and no use at all as a place to leave the van for a day. We aim for the first slot of the day where parking is tight, because that is when the street is emptiest. It is why the arrival time is what it is. We template in your kitchen and fit in your kitchen, so there is nothing to visit and nothing to collect.

Does the housing in Gascoigne change how worktop installation works?

Entry-phone access, a booked lift and a parking bay near the entrance all have to be arranged before a date is confirmed. Deck access or a single narrow staircase with tight half-landings means long pieces get walked up on edge, and the landing turn is checked before we commit. The slow parts are slow for a reason. Fire doors and 90-degree landings are the real limit on flat jobs here, so lengths are cut to what will physically turn on the landing.

How does the stone actually reach a kitchen in Gascoigne?

Flats above ground level throughout, so it is lifts, communal stairs, narrow landings and fire doors, with delivery times often restricted by the managing agent. Weight tells on a staircase more than anywhere else, because there is nowhere to set a piece down mid-flight and no way to change your grip once it is moving. The fitting day is planned backwards from that point, before anything comes off the van. It gets checked before the first piece is lifted.

Do you get much worktop installation work in Gascoigne?

Not particularly, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise. What the research on this patch actually lists is worktop replacement, worktop templating and worktop splashbacks & upstands. That is a statement about the local housing rather than about the work. It is quoted, cut and fitted exactly the same way here as anywhere else on the patch. Developer-fitted kitchens come with thin cam-lock carcasses, which are fine under laminate and want bracing before stone goes on them. The fitting day is scheduled to suit that rather than to suit the diary. The prep list is not optional. Housings and integrated appliances are set out for a 38mm laminate top, so dropping to 20mm or 30mm stone changes the clearances and needs checking before anything is cut. One visit, with the sink and hob seated and sealed before we leave. Sealed before we leave.

Why do two Gascoigne kitchens the same size price differently?

The return piece is the awkward one on a slab: short, full depth, and rarely nesting neatly against the long lengths, so yield rather than area is what moves the material figure. Joins are pulled with suction clamps and finished flush, then colour-matched, which is the last thing done rather than the first. The join is the last thing finished. Material is £110-£550 per square metre supply only, and templating, fabrication and fitting are quoted on their own lines.

What has to be finished before you can template?

Boxing is rarely the same depth at worktop height as it is at floor level, so measuring it low down is the usual reason a top will not sit back. On the day it means dry-laying, marking, and cutting the scribe on site before anything is bonded. Dry-lay, mark, cut, then bond. Reserve a space as close to the block entrance as possible and clear the landing and stairs of prams, bikes and stored items. A street with houses in single occupation next to the same houses cut into flats produces two completely different jobs from the same elevation. A half-day of access is not a fitting day, and it is better to say so at booking than to find out at eleven. Access for the whole slot, or a different day.
